2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission alternator???

1997 2500. At idle, volt meter in truck is down around 8. When I start to drive and rpm's go up to 1500 it reads 14. Is this likely to be the alternator? Are there brushes in there that can be replaced or just replace the whole thing?
 
Assuming all your battery connections are clean and tight, go to an auto parts store and have them load test your batteries. They can also check the output of your altenator.

Geno's has rebuild kits for the altenator, they're very simple to rebuild and much cheaper than a quality replacement.
