Needing a alt. Guys, how about some suggestions. I know there is some big amp alt out there, but I think it was a couple hundred$$. Wanting to keep it under 200. 00 Autozone is 130. 00 not sure if I want a autozone alt though.

What is wrong with it do you know? You might be able to get the parts to fix it yourself with a rebuild kit from Geno's. Otherwise I would suggest finding a shop locally that can rebuild it; it's usually pretty cheap and reliable. Of course, if time is of the essence, this may not be an option...

I went to the larger 200amp deal because of the added electrical strain on my truck. The addition of the stereo,FASS and Flex-A-Lite fans I knew would draw alot harder on the factory amp unit. It has worked well for me since the install... ... Andy

I know you said you want to keep the cost down, but when my dies, I am going to support a TDR advertiser and buy one here Alternators

$360, but most rebuilds IMHO are junk from AutoZone, etc.

I am at 222K on my OEM one and counting, I figure if OEM is that good then I might as well buy OEM when the time comes.

Firstly, I am NOT an alternator professional. BUT I grew up with electronics and a soldering gun since I was a preteen (when you had to decide: germanium or silicon transistors - 13. 6 volt or 25!!) That said IMHO alternators as mech-electrical devices are a funny species. unlike alot of things where if you over-rate it you just burned money, if you can - within reason - over-rate your alternator so that it never has to operate at the upper end of its duty cycle/current range the reduced thermal and mechanical stress will add significantly to its life. If it is well made and will loaf for most of its life it will last that much longer!!

Which was exactly my reasoning for the one I installed on my truck. I did alot of digging here in my area locally with the local shops who specialize in rebuilding them. One of the oldest shops owners sat down and talked to me about the duty cycle and the demands placed by my added options. It was upon his advice that I went with the bigger unit and Optima batteries. You can clearly see what he had told me back then when you drive the truck and watch the volt and amp gauges... ... . Andy
