Is there any benefits to aluminum exhaust pipe to stainless. Or vise versa. Companies that have stainless seem to advertise greater loss in exhaist temps(sometimes up to 100 degrees cooler than aluminum) I what under the impression that aluminum had better cooling properties.

When I was looking at the exhaust systems I did not come across any that were aluminum. I foud the SS and ALUMINIZED steel. Is this what you have found? I would stay away from an aluminum system because of the possibility of crushing if it took a big hit underneath. I lost a driveshaft and it really whacked shape out of the muffler.

I have never replaced a system because it rusted out. We have all seen parts dragging under cars and their stuff was probably rusted through and dragging the pavement. I think it would be more of an issue in salted road environments. The SS may have a greater lifespan in those areas.

I think alot will depend on where you live and the quality of stainless steel. 304 stainless steel will not rust, but a cheaper grade will. I saw some posts where Banks SS exhaust rusted.

I live in the south so the salted roads is not a concern. Also, Jardine gives lifetime warranty on their exhaust so SS in not a factor for me. Of course SS exhaust looks cool, but not worth twice as much IMO.

Your right it is aluminized steel. Which is better though. SS or aluminized steel pipe.

Does SS really lower egt better than the aluminized pipe?

The pipe inside diameter will dictate the flow rate, which will dictate the EGT drop given equal flow rates for the mufflers used. 4" aluminized steel and 4" stainless mandrel bent exhuast systems will be EQUAL in EGT reduction. Hope this helps clear that up for you.

The stainless in a good grade as mentioned above can be polished to look like chrome and will not rust:cool:   That would be triple cool!!!!! Stainless in a good grade will last forever, aluminized in a salty environment will last at least 4 or 5 years, choice is yours. If money was not a concern I would go for the stainless and polish it. :D

I recommend the aluminized stuff, but I'm cheap and don't see the benefit of the stainless for the diesels. If you had a gaser, I'd say otherwise.

Now. . If you want to show your truck and like to spit pollish everything on it, then the stainless is the way to go.

Aluminized pipes will last a long time behind a diesel engine. Probably longer than you will keep the truck. If you know for sure that you'll keep the truck forever and will never want to make any changes to your exhaust system again, then go for the stainless.

I've seen 4" aluminized systems on Michigan school buses last over ten years, except for the mufflers, which tend to rust out under the hanger straps that wrap around it.

My uncle is in the steel foundry business. I worked there 35 years ago. (man that will make you want to study hard and get a good education :D ) If I remember correctly, a big part of what makes stainless steel stainless is the amount of aluminum they add to the mix. I would go with stainless.

I thought it was the amount of "NI" (nickel) they add to the steel:rolleyes:

I really don't think we need stainless for our diesels.

Yes chromium is the secret ingredient. Around 11-12% I think starts the stainless category.

The chromium forms a surface when the steel is formed that protects the metal. If it is worn down enough, stainless WILL "rust", depending on the grade.

Also not all grades of stainless are non-magnetic, not that it applies to us:)

Sorry, I said it was 35 years ago!!! Back then all I was really thinking about was getting off work and going to the drive-in movie with my girl friend. Sorry for the mistake. I do remember I hated working at that foundry.
