The body shops around the country are not prepared with equipment to do body collision work on the new f150. The Aluminum superduty caught fire and melted.

Interesting that the artcle stated that it will cost between $30,000 and $50,000 for the body shops to upgrade equipment to handle the new F150. A buddy of mine that owns an independent body shop told me a while ago that he wasn't going to upgrade his shop to work on the new aluminum bodies at least for now. Now I understand why.

Ford has this commercial that talks about military grade aluminum. But they don't talk about the fact that there will be only Ford dealer shops that can repair their collusions. I think about $5000 of the sticker price goes to help upgrade ford dealer body shops.

It will just keep them busier increasing there profits. Well worth the 50k investment.

I realize that any vehicle might catch fire under certain circumstances (though of course diesel fueled vehicles are less prone to spontaneous ignition then gasoline fueled vehicles), but DAM that prototype alumnumim trcuk fire was intensely hot…and it took only 21 minutes of the ENTIRE truck to melt-- did you see where the aluminum just disintegrated, it's amazing AND scary!!! Of course, it's also just another reason you will NOT catch me driving a Ford.

$50,000 for one model of vehicle? I wouldn't make that investment unless I knew there would be alot of them in accidents.

There won't even be alot if them on the road for quite a while

I'm sure that the shops will equip as demand increases. It's also a possibility that other brands will start using more aluminum if the F150 experiment proves to be successful.

Just one other consideration about the aluminum body transition. We have the added per unit cost, the added equipment and the repair training cost.

So what do you think will happen to insurance rates once the insurance companies start paying out on the claims for the aluminum bodied trucks???

I thinking 50 to 70 % increase on comprehensive and collision. Opinions???

I agree. Plus the possibility there may not be an equipped shop in every county. They would need to factor in transportation costs to an equipped facility. I always call my insurance before signing and driving. Just to see what my rates will be. 50%-70% sounds about right for the next 7-10 years. But if you do in dealer financing , you have to call your insurance company almost immediately because the loaning finance ccompany requires you carry comprehensive/collision insurance

Buddy of mine bought one of those coors beer cans....and yes his insurance went up 85.00 mth. went from a 2012 to a 2014

The 2014 is still steel. Perhaps there's some other issue, perhaps his driving record or the value of the truck. I only pay about twice his increase to insure three vehicles.

My bad its a 2015 f150 and yes his insurance did go up because of the beer can. He Confirmed it! He wanted to thank you for dissing him, not the insurance companys!

WELL Look at it this way it will make then Easier to Push when they Break down. and the poor free Puppy they give to every Owner won't have to walk so much either . The Lighter weight will surely come in Handi when they make the Stupid Duties out of Alum.

There are many other cars with aluminum bodies or parts on it, most sports cars - and Volkswagen Group uses it a lot.
It only new for a Pickup Truck.

A guy at work had an older exploder with white corrosion on the front fender. When asked about it he confirmed it was an aluminum fender. A quick google search found that since 2011 explorers had aluminum body parts, but his had to be more than 4 years old.
