Many grades of stainless can and will rust due to "free iron" in the product. I made a couple items out of stainless, and had to have it electropolished to remove the "free iron" so it would not have rusting. This process removes the surface iron only. If you drill, cut or other after having this process done it will need to be done again to stop rust in the areas where the work was done. Wasn't cheap either, I didn't have enough material, but had to pay a min. of $75. Better to spend the money on a better grade. I don't remember but I think 304 doesn't rust, but 306 does. Someone please refresh my memory
I have seen advertised for Jeep Wranglers an item thats made from aluminum, the idea is the part will flex but return back to original shape, unlike a steel piece would. I'm sure if it is hit right it will stay bent. This was made for the rock crawling crowd and is a steering component.
