Always inspect the seals

I normally inspect new parts before installation for damage or irregularities. I got in a hurry Friday installing a new thermostat. After installation I ran it until the thermostat opened, no problems. I then drove @ 30 miles and found a small puddle of coolant on the ground. I tore it back down yesterday and found this. Of course, no way to get a new one on Christmas Day, so I reused the old one. Due to my haste, I lost a couple of hours and a couple gallons of coolant.

ALWAYS inspect the seals.

@BigPapa ,Sometimes the extra 5 minutes saves you 30+! Sucks having doing the job twice! at least it didn't leave you stranded on the side of the highway.

Cummins as far as I know. It was the 3928499-KIT from Geno’s. Of course, it’s possible that I did it somehow, but it would be very difficult to do that during installation.

That number is for a 84-98 12V engine.

Slits happen.

I had a weeping tstat seal too a couple yrs back. Had to fix in camp. It was such a slow leak it evaporated to a stain on the block. It only showed liquid leak while cool.
