overload spring or air bags?

Brake Failure

I am calculating the max pin weight for my 5th wheel.

CURB WEIGHT (standard equipment + fuel) = 6775 lbs

GVWR = 9000 minus 6775 = 2225 lbs payload

Passengers weight (max) = 600 lbs

5th wheel hitch = 150 lbs

Tool box and contents = 150 lbs

line-x bed liner = 50 lbs

Weston step bars = 50 lbs

TOTAL 1000 lbs

PAYLOAD... ... ... ... ... . 2225 lbs

-1000 lbs

--------------

1225 lbs is max pin weight

I MUST be doing something wrong.

I read all the time where people with the same truck are pulling trailers with pin weights of MUCH more than that.

You are doing it right. They are towing overweight. If you are shopping for a 5er, the problem gets even worse with the trailer. Assuming the weights from the maufacturer are accurate (yea, right) you need to add about 4 lbs per gallon for propane, about 65 lbs per battery, most of which is directly transfered to the pin. You are also a bit low on the hitch weight; I think mine is about 180 lbs. See http://www.klenger.net/arctic-fox/weight/index.html for more info on RV weights.

Get your truck weighed with all the stuff you'll normally carry. I have a 2500 also, and it weighed 6760. That included a 16K hitch, turboliner, foldacover top and a full tank of gas. That leaves 2240 lbs. available (including driver, passenger(s), etc. and pin weight.

Rroton, You need to weigh your truck on a scale to get the FRONT/REAR axle weights which are more important. The pin weight is going to be part of the rear axle weight and you're limited to 3195#(tire limit)*2 = 6390# of rear axle weight on a SRW 3rd gen SLT. Let's say your truck weighs 8000 SOAKING wet. Say it's 4500 up front and 3500 out back. Then you have 6390# - 3500# = 2890# before you reach your rear tire limits.

Yes, this is "technically" and "legally" over the GVW but still safe in my opinion as long as everything else is good... springs, brakes, coupling, etc.
