After mounting real backup lights and switching over amber leds in the clear lenses. Is there a board available or has anyone come up with a logic circuit using an exclusive- or gate ? So if it sees the brake light (which activates both left and right at once) it will not make. The brake light would be normal but the new amber leds could light only right or left. This would enable you to leave the trailer wiring alone.

If you only want them to light when you hit your turn signal, run a wire from each of your front turn signals and splice into the amber lights in the rear. That's what I was told to do, and it works with minimal effort. If you don't like that route, I can build you a board that has the e-or gate. or mail you a wiring diagram for one.

Hope this helps

I did this conversion for the first time back in November of '98. Turned out real nice, didn't mess with the trailer wiring at all. Ran 4 wires to the back of the truck, now I got amber turn signals, and no flashing reds in the back. I have diagrams, let me know if you are interested. -- email address removed --

Hi Gizmo,

Seems like the gate at the back would be a really neat way to do that. I would be interested in seeing a wiring diagram. Is there a 12 volt gate available or would you have to knock the voltage down for the gate?I am getting tired of running wires to the back of the truck, sometimes I feel like I should have run a 4 inch chase pipe. Thanks RJ

rear turn signals

i did evan's conversion, but ran to the white/tan wire in the loom to the rear, for brake lights. i left the amber turn signals wired as the original stop/turns were. only downside(?) is that the amber light on the non turn side stays on solid with braking. just makes me more visible during braking. they stay on steady with braking with no turn... ... . not a bad thing in my thinking. :)

I completed Evan's conversion yesterday. Used the CMSL lead to power a relay for the brake lights. Used the power in the 7way for the power for the back up lights relay triggered by the original wiring. Ran two wires back to the Amber turn signals. Everything seems to work as normal on the trailer.

Where are the two wires for the ambers coming from?In addition do we use a 3157 amber bulb and the same socket the back up light was using?

amber rear turn signals

rj2, the dg/br wire is moved from the running light/ stop/ turn socket to the backup light socket (after disconnecting the vt/bk). alternatively, some folks run a wire from the front turn signal all the way back to the backup light socket, and disconnect the white/tan wire at the turnsignal switch. then you must pick up the white/tan wire somewhere in the loom at the back of the truck, and run it to the vt/bk "stub" on the original light, for red stop lights.

yes, the socket is for a 3157 bulb. they are available in amber or if you go to LEDs, in amber. i chose to just let the ambers function as the old stop/turn lights functioned.
