It really is amazing that our country even exists! Those rag-tag, poorly armed "rebels" who became our founding fathers were up against incredible odds. Heck, a lot of them didn't even have shoes!
One of my ancestors was a surgeon in General Washington's army. My folks have been researching our family tree for many years. They have read quite a few books on the revolutionary war in their search for any scrap of information they could find about this particular ancestor.
One story that they had read told about a "red coat" who was a spy for General Washington. Only a select few knew who he really was. He would allow the rebels to capture him, and after someone was able to figure out who he was and get whatever information he had to General Washington, he always managed to "escape". Like I said, only a select few knew that he was a spy. The rest of the colonists despised him, they even burned down his house.
I'm sure there are many, many amazing stories of bravery and courage that would make for great movies and books.
I haven't seen "The Patriot", in fact, I hadn't heard about it until I read this post. Like you said, Gene, probably most people have no idea what the war in the movie is about. It really is sad how most people have such poor knowledge of our history, but yet they can rattle off all kinds of details about "The Simpsons", Madonna's wedding, or whatever.
