I have been wanting to add extra fuel capacity to my truck. The reason for the extra fuel is that I drive a lot (oilfield) and the possibility of fuel shortages caused by terrorism. It is almost impossible to protect a gasoline/diesel refining plant from attack. I am not paranoid, I am prepared (RKBA) Take a look at the fuel shortages caused by the hurricanes in Florida.

I spent quite a bit of time researching the various companies and my main criteria was function and reliability. I finally settled on a in-bed combination tool box and 40 gallon fuel tank from American Tank, located in Frisco, Texas: www.auxtank.com

American Tank has a system with a 4-way valve mounted on the frame controlled by a toggle switch on the dash. It allows me to draw fuel directly from either the stock tank or the in-bed tank without an electric fuel pump and monitor the fuel level with my stock fuel gauge. No transfer pump, no computers, very simple; not much to go wrong. Mike Shuman installed it for me and did a great job; I was very pleased with the service and attention to detail; they made it right.

One problem I had to overcome with regard to function was the ARE topper on my truck and how to fill it up without having to crawl into the bed everytime.

Transferflow has a filler tube that mounts on, and goes through the topper shell. I called them to inquire and they refused to sell it to me. They said it could only be used on certified tanks, American Tank meets the criteria and Transferflow said they never heard of American Tank. That was a bunch of bull, because both companies advertise in TDR. It sounded to me like sour grape competition.

Anyway, I didn't really want to drill a hole in my topper so I came up with the idea of an extended filler tube and had it fabricated. In the end everything worked out and I am very pleased.
