Amp & Crossover install questions

Getting ready to install amp and component speakers with big crossovers. Regular cab truck. I was planning on mounting amp on back wall, behind passenger seat. Is that a good place? Are there any others? Amp is JL 300/4, not exactly small.



Crossovers are JL XR series, they are big. I could try to put them in the doors, but I am considering mounting them right next to the amp and just running more speaker wire up front to the speakers. Any suggestions here?



I guess I have another one while I am at it... rear speakers. I was going with a decent set of JL coaxials. I figure the rear is not that important in reg cab truck. Have any of you done components in rear? Is there benefit? Where did you put the tweeters?

I wouldn't waste time with tweets in the rear unless you are a true audiophile and feel like you have dead spots in the cab. You're better off to get a set of rears that play well from about 300 hz and up to get you a fuller low end. Lots of people forget about traditional woofers instead of just sub woofers and end up with "one note wonders". I would make a model suggestion but i've never been a JL fan. They get the job done though. PM me if you've got any questions

You can run coaxials in the back of a reg cab just fine. I'm using components in the back of mine, but mine is quad cab, and people sit back there.

I mounted my amp under the center seat console on the floor. I have an 01 so not sure if yours is the same but there is plenty of room under there at least for my amp. Mine has the 40/20/40 front seat and the center section does not move forward or back.

The back wall works great for a amp rack. Mine is a quad cab but the idea is the same. See more pics in my Readers Rigs.

Have you got a buildup on your sub box, like pics, dimensions. . that kinda stuff?



I was going to get an MTX thunderform because I thought most of the Fosgates were too tall. (I'm drooling over yours right now btw)

Fosgates are too tall. I used the HX2 series which is the second best line fosgate made next to the "Power" line, which I could not wedge in for the life of me. Any of the more entry level speakers will clear with room to spare but any high end subwoofer with lots of excursion will either not fit or require you to drive the floor down to make room. I got the room because I took a sledge and drove the floor down about 2 inches. I went as far as I could, I have about 3/8 inches of clearance between the floor and the fuel tank. Another thing you need to watch out for is air space. I am a MacCauley fan but their woofers require too much air space to use in the box I made. Hence the reason I went to Fosgate HX2.



I made this box from scratch and don't have any dimensions but I took many pictures during install and posted them in my Readers Rigs. Nothing against MTX but I tried a MTX Thunderforms box (two 10's) in my 2000 Dakota and returned it because it sounded like..... dog doo. I have always had high end systems in every car I owned and have expensive taste but maybe for the beginning Audiophile it would have been fine. For me it was unexceptable, I could've produced more bass from two 8"s in a custom enclosure.



This system uses two BD1000 running four 10's and a 750X running the four 6. 5" MB Quarts in all four doors. Each 10 is being fed over 600 watts RMS (1200 watts peak) and the MB's are getting about 180 watts RMS (360 peak).

I seriously thought about cutting the floor and fiberglassing a box to the underside of the truck for a couple of 15's. Canned that idea because I always like to complement two 15 with two 10's or four 8's becuase 15 are too boomy but if you add a couple of 10's you get much better bass response.



Decided to hold off on the cam and get twins instead. Would've bought the piping last week but the wife made me get a Canon Digital Rebel instead so now I need to wait a couple more weeks to get the piping. Don't worry Evan, you can bet that as sson as they are on I will be bringing them up to take a run on the Dyno.



BTW, I still don't think this Comp is working as good as the original, regardless what the dyno says. Not complaining..... just need bigger injectors to make up for it.

I agree with the mtx/fosgate arguement completely have owned both. . I was just willing to sacrfice for the clean look and fit, and the lessened ability for the mtx to walk off with someone else because a thief knew what they were. The only product from MTX i've been impressed with was a tripple 10" box I had but it didn't have any range. . maybe 75 hz of range was usable. . I ran a fosgate box for 3 years in my bronco and people still ask about it even now. It was sort of a local legend.

~4 cu ft total. Floor of the box is fiberglass, with 3/4" MDF top, sides, back and front. Subs are 2x Resonant Engineering SX 10's, ported. Now that the whole system is together, it sounds quite good. Took me long enough.

Keith, very nice. How is it sitting in the back? I wish I could have raised the seat but the wife said no way. If I didn't have kids I would be running two 18's and six 10's with a missing rear seat. Needless to say I would have been in deep ... .....

BTW, go to a dealer and pick up a can of agate spray paint. Then spray those aluminum spacers so it looks stock.

I was thinking to polish them. We were supposed to weld the fronts solid so they don't just look like tube, but ran out of time. May get to it one day.



I usually don't have rear seat passengers, but I can get back there without hitting my head, no problem.
