Read John Martins article on oils in TDR issue 58. Actually Robert Patton did the
article with info from Martin. Amsoil Prem. Syn. CJ-4 was among the bottom
of the list. You can get Valvoline Premium Blue Classic CI-4+ for less than half the
price and he rated it at the top.

Given there are many documented engines with over 5,000,000 miles on them using conventional oil, I see no reason to spend the extra money for synthetic oil.

Several TDR issues back our illustrious leader related a story of his use of conventional oil to 20,000 miles and it still tested good. He did admit to caving in and changing it at that point.

Amsoil that I use is CI-4 marine/diesel 15-40, but Oops Mr. John and Robert left it off the list in issue 58.

:--)

and BTW, I don't pay full price for it either.

My truck consumed the ams syn, I switched back to rottella and it stopped. I feel it worked well and all but I couldnt constantly be adding oil that cost that much.

I used Amsoil in my 99 until about a year ago, because in 1998 when I bought my truck it was pretty much the only one available. Now I use Rotella, Valvoline purple, Shell, depending on what I can find the cheapest. (I will have to read the article by Robert and John. ) In my opinion as long as it is synthetic and a good brand (shell, rotella, valvoline) it pretty much is the same except for price. I use synthetic because it is a proven better lubricant then dino oil, and although like West Tennessee said conventional oils will do the job, synthetic does it better. We all spend a lot of money on these trucks; add ons, HP increasers, etc so a few extra bucks for a better oil is well worth the money.

Amsoil needs to lower their prices; they are no longer the only kids on the block.

Amsoil 15w40 is an excellent oil, been running it for a few years & get very good readings on oil samples. I change it every 15,000 miles. I like that it's the old spec pre-2007 oil.

my 02 burned mobil 1, switched to Komatsu 15w-40 since it is what cummins recommends, plus i work for them, no more oil consumption!

I was also a long time Amsoil customer, untill recently. I just couldn't justify the increased cost.

I still use synthetic, just not Amsoil.

5 Million mile engines? Where are they?

I'vebeen very happy with Mobil 1 15-50 (red top) sometimes called racing oil. Then it became Delvac "1" for trucks and it still worked out great.

Now, they've changed everything again (markeing wizzards?) and the 15-50 is now under a gold top and is called "extended performance"

I've never had to add oil, ever, using the Mobil 1 products. Not saying this is the best, just adding my 2c as to what has worked for me.

Now doing research here to see what's popular for the NV-6-speed.....

Here we go another oil forum Oo.

If you are going to use the 15-40 stay with the CI not the CJ amsoil makes, I used the CI 15-40 and had analysis done on the oil, it came back ok. i switched to the series 3000 5-30 and have been running it evr since. the oil analysis on this compared to the 15-40 was night and day. i run this oil to about 15,000 and then change oil and filter.

IF you don't put the mileage on the truck it does not pay off in the long run, but if you put over 20k on the truck in a year then i feal it pays for itself, with less fequent times under the hood. but like before this is all subjective opinion and what i have learned works best for me.

Overall i would go witht the series 3000 it protects a lot better with the test that i have gotten back.

if you haven't been using synthetic there's a thread somewhere talking about after switching leaks developing on higher mileage cummins, that's the reason I'm staying with the old rotella, no drips now and I don't want any
