I have an anecdotal piece of evidence for synthetics. I had an ‘87 Chebbie S-10 Blazer that I bought new. It had the notorious 2. 8 V-6 grenade for an engine. These were famous for not making much over 80,000 or so miles in normal usage. They either bled out from leaks or the compression sagged to the point where the already anemic engine just couldn’t move the vehicle. I heard that some failed spectacularly.
Mine lived in the mountains, pulling hard, with a good bit of 4-wheeling. After break in, I ran nothing but Mobil 1 in it at 5,000 mile changes. I sold it at 90,000 miles to a guy who kept it up with Mobil 1, and he sold it at 135,000 to his brother, who gave it the same service. It’s still running strong, with no leaks, at over 158,000! Either this engine is a freak of the species, or it’s the oil.
This was enough evidence for me. I’ve been running sythetics ever since, and of course, my beloved CTD is on a strict Amsoil diet.
I know this isn’t scientific, but WTH, it’s what makes us feel comfortable with out investments that’s the bottom line anyway.
