I have an anecdotal piece of evidence for synthetics. I had an ‘87 Chebbie S-10 Blazer that I bought new. It had the notorious 2. 8 V-6 grenade for an engine. These were famous for not making much over 80,000 or so miles in normal usage. They either bled out from leaks or the compression sagged to the point where the already anemic engine just couldn’t move the vehicle. I heard that some failed spectacularly.

Mine lived in the mountains, pulling hard, with a good bit of 4-wheeling. After break in, I ran nothing but Mobil 1 in it at 5,000 mile changes. I sold it at 90,000 miles to a guy who kept it up with Mobil 1, and he sold it at 135,000 to his brother, who gave it the same service. It’s still running strong, with no leaks, at over 158,000! Either this engine is a freak of the species, or it’s the oil.

This was enough evidence for me. I’ve been running sythetics ever since, and of course, my beloved CTD is on a strict Amsoil diet.

I know this isn’t scientific, but WTH, it’s what makes us feel comfortable with out investments that’s the bottom line anyway.

Kodiak, not to discredit the value of synthetic oil, but some of those GM 2. 8 V6s held up remarkably well. My first car was a '80 Skylark that I beat the tar out of. I put a tach in it and rapped it out to 6500rpm and beyond literally hundreds of times. I delivered pizza with it 2 years and took it 4-wheeling a few times. When I sold it at 225,000 miles the motor had nothing more than a water pump and was using less than a quart of oil between changes. It never saw a drop of synthetic oil. I always bought the cheapest oil available.

But in my expensive 2001 Ram I am running Amsoil 15W40 but want to go back to the Mobil Delvac 1 I ran in my '98. 5. I want to do the Amsoil 5W30 but the Mobil is more affordable and it did great in very cold temps and oil analysis showed 11ppm Iron count running it 5K miles.

Amzoilman, Haven't been in touch with you in a long time. Signed up as a dealer in 95.
I now have 70000 on my 95 and engine is clean as a whistle. I am changing filters at 6000 and oil at 12000. I feel that I am getting a superior oil and at a decent price.
After analizing at 12000 this oil is still good, however I choose to change it. Mainly because it has paid for itself and it gives me piece of mind. I am still useing 15-40 because thats what I started with. I choose to stay with it. Hope all is well Wayne.

Lance P. ,what you're doing is exactly what I recently decided to do. Oil filter change at 6000,and dump the oil at 12000. I also chose the 15w40,to be honest it just makes me feel better having the heavier weight in. I just put my 1st dose of Amsoil in with about 9000 miles on the truck. The truck just feels better now.
I also think the motor is pretty well broke in since the camper has been in the bed the whole time.

Hey Kodiak, we purchased my wife's '91 Chevy 2. 8 V6 equipped S-10 new and have used Mobil 1 since about 3k mi. It now has over 150k mi. and is still running very strong. the ONLY thing that has required replacement has been the valve seals (under warranty... prior to 36k mi. ). Even the original clutch and battery are still going strong! Her S-10 has been the most reliable rig either of us have ever owned! One of these days we're going to have to get her a new truck... BUT, we're still keepin' the S-10 as a farm truck.
