ok. I just orderd my typical 15w-40, fuel filter, oil filter combo from ams oil. Got to thinking, check my manual just to be sure, yes, Cummins doesn't mind a 5w-40. But Amsoil doesn't do anything but a 5w-30 for diesel. it meets CI-4 spec.

It's going to be cold for a while around here. I figure this next oil change (or two) I should drop to a 5w-30 or something. Good bad? does the 30 vs. 40 matter much?

I have a good idea what the numbers mean. bottom line, the lower the first number, the better cold flow. so in theory, a 5w in the -10degree mornins is idea, even with block heater running.

So, when things are warmed up, there shold be no differnece between a 5w-40 and a 15w-40. except the 5w-40 has more attitives to create the viscosity then the 15w-40 would have

Sure they do!

AFL 5w40

I ran it in my VW diesel since they came out with it.

API SL, CI-4, CF

Go for the 5W-40. The 40W matters to me. The engine is going to get warm and to my way of thinking once it's warm I would rather have the 40W in it.

If anybody is running amsoil 5w40 in their new jetta tdi PD, the spec required is 505. 01 or 506. 01, which didn't show on the spec sheet.

I am running the Amsoil 5w-30 in my truck. The other morning it was 10 below. One cycle of the heater and it cranked over like it was summertime. The truck was not plugged in at all.

Saying that the 30 would be to thin when hot, without any evidence to back it up, just doesn't make sense.

The spec. you quote is for the 2004 and newer TDI's with the BEW or BRM diesel. The Amsoil does meet the spec for the TDI's up to 2003. Their oil is now being tested for the newer spec. and should be available after the first of the year.

Jason,

The Amsoil "HEAVY DUTY DIESEL" 5W-30 is just that! It is a very high quality HEAVY DUTY DIESEL oil. There are many OTR Diesels using this oil, especially in the cold country. Look up "Jeff Foster" Trucking in Duluth Minn. They use it exclusively!

The 5W part is the Low-temperature Cranking Viscosity in cP, . and should be 3500cP @ -25 (C) MAX. The 40 part is the operating viscosity in cSt @ 100 (C) and should fall between 12. 5 Min and 16. 3 Max to be considered a 40 grade oil. The "Pour Point" is totaly different than Viscosity. It is an indicator of the ability of the oil to flow at cool operating temperatures, and is the LOWEST temperature at which the oil will flow when cooled under prescribed conditions. The Amsoil 5W-30 has a "pour point" somewhere around -65 F. Utilizing the ASTM standards.

No where did I say I was running this in my 2005 Jetta, it gets Motol! (I guess you read my sig and saw I have a 2005 Jetta and assumed that was what I was talking about, sorry)

My 98 TDI ran it until some old lady decided I did not need it anymore and rear ended it on Oct 11. (look at the bright side, that insurance check caused me to order my new truck :))

That's just what towpro is using in his 2005 jetta, therefore VW won't warrantee.

I see what your thinking. And I see what is spec vs. real world useage. also. So it's a toss up. Should I call and order 3 gallons of the 5w-30 (leaving the 15w40 for spring) is what I'm trying to deside.

Also, Work allows me to plug in all day Oo. Also, the truck get betwwwen 6 and 3 hours (depending on over night temp on weather.com) of block heater each morning. And unless I find my self constantly stopping in random places with no plug for more hten 8 hours, It shouldn't matter since it's always going to be warm. :)

Lemme check out my funds today and see about ordering 5w-30. . If things break. I'm comming after you :) The next 2 changes should be in deep cold like this.
