Newby question on boost/fuel modules

I've been running K&N Air Filter on my 01' since I bought it last April. No complaints and no problems with anything getting past filter. Since I was changing to Amsoil synthetic oil, I thought I'd try their foam dual stage filter. The filter itself look great, however placing it in the stock air box makes me nervous. There seems to be no surface on the air box "hinged" side to hold the filter in place. This seems to cause the filter to possibly gap and allow contanimants to get by. Unlike the K&Ns, there is no hard surface to hold the configuration of the foam filter. Unless, someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or how this filter will stay in place, its history. I'll go back to the K&N. The oil, oil filter, and fuel filter will stay, but there's no chance I'll gamble with something that is not ridged enough and will allow dirt to pass. I'm looking for you guys that have been using the Amsoil filters to tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Does the filter you have fit the bottom section fully? The top comes down and squeezes the foam down. It does seal, there are far too many oil samples taken on these filters, they do great. It filters finer than paper or K&N, no problem there. Be sure to blot the excess oil off the filter, or it makes a mess.

MGM, I know that this filters finer and that's why I wanted to try it. The filter seems to want to push down past the lip on the "hinged" side. If I place it in the bottom of the air box and square it, will the top flange cause the seal? Or should I place it in the top and try and keep the box and filter square? Also, it came oiled. When I talked to Amsoil, I got the impression that it was not oiled. Do I need to add any oil, or are these like the K&N, and they're over oiled? I really want to use this type of filter, but when the side pushed down, I lost some confidence.

fmj,

I have found the Amsoil filter to come a little over oiled. Take a lint free cloth and blot some oil off. You will know if it is still over oiled, oil will start to leak from the air box drain hole. If this happens remove and blot a little more oil off the filter. take caution to not remove too much.

I don't recall ever having a problem with the filter fitting in the box. Never noticed the problem you are describing. I would have to pull my filter and look at the bottom part of the box again, but I thought there was lip all the way around for the filter to sit on. The foam around the edge of the filter makes a good seal when the top is put back on. I have notice it to be a really tight fit/squeeze on the back of the box where the lip/bottom hinge area is located. Found it helps to fasten the clips on the back-side first.

One other thought, is the metal mesh (cage) sandwiched between the foam layers bent any. If the mesh cage is deformed a little it could be causing your fit problem.

Don't know if this helps, think I would have to actually see what's going on to get a better understanding of the problem.

If you have any more questions about the filter let me know and I'll try to answer them.

Is it possible that your airbox deformed or that you received the wrong Amsoil filter?

Well guys, it's in. Thanks for the replies. The filter is a TS106 and that is the one listed, so it is the right one. I made sure that the foam was pressed all the way around. I actually looked in the hose end. I think I was more concerned with the filter mesh fitting the lip and not be able to push down, when the combination of the bottom air box lip and the top flat surface is where the seal is made. Like MGM said, there are too many of these out there to not work properly. I also checked the air box to make sure it wasn't deformed. It looked good. Thanks for all the replys.

I wonder if yours was trimmed a little short? Mine almost stuck out over the bottom portion, and I had to sort of stuff it in.

I have had one that came unoiled. Ever since, Amsoil seems to dip them in a 55 gal drum, because oil is running everywhere! I don't believe you can blot too much off with a paper towel. When you squeeze it, it should be damp. It should not 'pool" up and run off like a wet dish rag.
Happy filtering!
