A friend with a 99 ford asked me if he puts on the Amsoil bypass filter system and and does the amsoil recomended oil changes (oil sampling and extended long drain) will it void his warranty..... will ford have a problem with him not sticking to specs... I know this is not a Dodge related question but you guys seem to be a wealth of knowledge

The Magnuson-Moss Act specifies that the dealers have to PROVE that it was the oil or aftermarket parts that caused the failure.

They can't legally void your warranty otherwise, but many do it anyway, knowing you most likely will not pursue the issue through legal channels. For example, it would not be legal for the dealer to void your warranty and refuse to cover the cost of fixing the power steering or alternator , after he notices the bypass filter setup.

I never had a problem getting my warranty repairs taken care of, and my dealer was aware of the filters, the Amsoil, and my gauges & other mods. But some aren't so lucky. The Ford service department in my town used to be run by an ex-convict that delighted in voiding everything he could get his hands on.

Peter,

Not to overstate the obvious, but if I were in your friend's position and were really concerned about this, I would go to the service manager at the dealership I'm going to call on for warranty service down the road and just state my case, "Hey, I'm thinking about blah blah... Is that going to be a problem when I bring my truck in for warranty service?" If he says, "No" - great; go for it. If he says, "Maybe" or "Yes", your friend will just have to make his decision accordingly - is making the change worth the potential warranty problems down the road? Only he can decide that.

The dealer and Ford, or Dodge, is not responsible for aftermarket failures.

Say the By-Pass falls off, loses oil and blows the engine. You are on your own.

A properly installed By-Pass with the Amsoil will not void any warranties.

Like if a rocker arm breaks, they can't just void your warranty because of the aftermarket part. They may try, but get them to put it in writing, they back off.

Amsoil will back you up in these situations.

ANYONE claiming that their warranties can't be voided due to aftermarket parts, that the buyer has Magnussen-Moss protection, etc. , etc, is TECHNICALLY correct...

AS LONG AS the unfortunate BUYER has DEEP pockets, and is willing to gamble VAST sums of money and TIME to actively pursue legal action thru the courts...

MOST of us DON'T! And rest assured that outfits like Amsoil have lawyers on retainer to challenge yer claims JUST THESAME as DC, Ford and GM do!

SO, *WHY* gamble substantial money, time and endless frustration over various warranty endangering trinkets and various "engine salvation" chemicals and such, for so MINIMAL a potential return? :p

Use name brand, manufacturer recmmended lubricants, service yer truck at recommended intervals, and apply go-fast goodies strictly at yer OWN risk - cuz 999 times out of a thousand, it will be YOU on the short end of the "warranty stick", and Magnussen-moss and yer "outhouse warranty lawyers" ain't gonna do ya a DERN BIT of good!;) :p :D

COUNT ON IT!
