Amsoil BMK-11 question

A while ago I ordered a BMK-11 oil bypass kit. I went to go install it this weekend but I couldn’t find any space under the hood or around the engine compartment that I liked. Either it was too tight of a space or in a spot I felt that was too “vulnerable” to damage from debris on the road or rocks being kicked up by the tires, etc. I did however find a spot back on the underside of the pickup bed right behind the cab that I liked. Besides the fact that this distance is MUCH further than the amount of hose I was given with the kit the other issue I ran into was if there would be any problems locating it that far away from the engine.



So my questions are this, does locating the filter that far back cause any problems? Can the oil pump move the oil that far? Will the filter still work up to its specified efficiency and flow rate?



Any help would be appreciated.

I mounted mine in front of the right front wheel well liner, attached to the body mount. It is protected, but still easy to change the element.

I welded up an L-shaped bracket and mntd. mine on the front of the intake manifold.

There is a vendor (Amsoil?) in Salinas, Ca. that makes and sells them. ($75-85) He was out of stock when I needed one, so I made one almost like his, but put a little more angle on it, for easier access when changing filters.

I used some rubber mounts to mount it to the firewall right between the AC deal and the motor. Granger has the rubber mounts. look for a thread I have about this. there should be part numbers listed as well.



The reason for the rubber is that the oil pump would transmit sound directly to the cap if you mounted it with out the rubber mounts. . No dents from it bouncing around either.

I’ve looked at all those locations and don’t really care for any of them. They’re all too cramped for my taste or in too vulnerable of a location or the bottom of the filter hangs down below my bumper (I’ve removed the plastic air dam that hangs below the front bumper). I really like the location I found underneath the bed right behind the cab. There’s plenty of room to access the filter, it’s up out of harms way and it’s not connected to the cab (no worry of sound transmitting thru the cab). I’m just questioning if the oil pump will have any issues with moving the oil that far back? Other than that I didn’t think that there’d be a problem locating it back by the bed.



As far as sourcing additional hose that I would need am I stuck using the amsoil stuff or can I order some up from Summit or get it at my local Napa or hydraulic store?

i used stainless braidline, and AN fittings, i also mounted mine on the intake manifold. Mounting your back that far should be no problem. i cant see the pump working to hard. just use big ID line and you should be fine. heck, it might help cool it some.

When you do decide on a spot you might hear a hum or buzz from the oil pump. At first this scared the heck out of me, not knowing what it was. Thought I was starving the turbo for oil. A call to Amsoil and I was told that Cummins builds a "robust" oil pump that can be noisy at times. The extra filter gives this noise a path out of the engine and into the rest of the truck. They suggested I mount it on a rubber backing to absorb some of the noise, but by this time it was already done and I didn't want to redo it. By now I don't even notice the noise anymore. I would assume that because it has such a "robust" oil pump that locating the filter further back shouldn't do it any harm, but that's just a guess.

That's a Gulf Coast, but I had a BMK-11 mounted to the same spot. The BMK-11 was attached to one of the bed crossmembers. I had no problems with 1/4"ID hydraulic hose with either filter, regardless of temps.

If its too cold for oil to push through that system, the bypass filter is the restriction, not the length of hose. I'm using 5kpsi 1/4" hydraulic hose and regular barbed fittings... nothing special. Got the hose from eBay and the fittings from the local hardware store. You don't need anything larger than 1/4"ID. The orifice is your limiting factor to flow rate (and that won't care if you have 1/4" or 2" hose, you still have a 0. 042" orifice).

I estimate I have around 25 feet of 1/4" line plumbed into my system, and again, zero problems.

I also had a cooler installed... don't waste your time, there is not enough volume of oil through the bypass system to make any difference...

1/4 inch ID is what i used as well. and i agree. dont need a cooler that far out. it will cool its self!

This is how I mounted mine, Works great! This is only good for the BMK-11. It ends up just behind the Passenger front bumper, and in front of the wheel well housing. Does not go below the bumper, and I have never even come close to hitting it when off-road.
