I want to install the Amsoil system on my 2001 but dislike the idea of running the return line thru a hold drilled in my oil filler cap, seems a little mousy to me. I would rather pull my oil pan and install a fitting for the return but after examining it, it does not look like it would come out too easy. Has anyone done this or know how hard the pan is to remove??????????

The Amsoil Dual Bypass filter system is part #BMK-15 for the Dodge Ram with the Cummins TD. This kit will remote mount the full flow filter, adding a bypass filter as well. Very #ad
I just added this system to my Ram. Ted Kidd (TDR member and semi-frequent TDR BB poster) just started producing a trick mounting bracket that allows the installation of the Amsoil Dual Bypass mount to the passenger side battery. Search the Product Forum or a recent post by him and click on the Amsoil filter mount, located at the bottom of his signature.

It was also suggested to me that you could plumb the return line from the single bypass system to the turbocharger drainback tube or timing cover.

Both systems have their advantages. When I was researching both of these systems, I'd always favored the Dual system, later deciding to purchase same although, it was more necessity than anything else... after the addition of my Air Bulldog induction hood. #ad

Go with the dual bypass and save yourself the hassel of messing with removing the oil pan or drilling a hole somewhere on your engine. Also there will be one less hose in the way when using the dual bypass system. About a month ago in the products forum someone was showing photos of a very trick and heavy duty mount on the passenger side battery for the dual bypass system.
 
I'm buying one of these this week. Doesn't the dual system have a smaller inlet then the stock oil filter? Seems to me I read somewhere that by installing the dual system the oil feed is reduced from 1" to 3/4" (from the inlet size to hose diameter). I could be wrong -- let me know (I know you will).

Also: EXACTLY what needs to be ordered to get the bypass (single) and all fittings plus return lines? I went to the amsoil site -- NOTHING is explained at all. "DETAIL" takes you to the same marketing blurb every time.

WELL - regardless of the ridicule it generates - I am using an old Frantz toilet paper filter that I've had on a couple of cars in my past. I used the plugged opening on top of the normal oil filter housing for the supply line, and punched a hole near the top pf the pan for the return line. So far, no problems, and oil is visually cleaner, longer between changes...

I'm not a believer in the "looks cleanererer" method of checking your oil quality. TP cleans lots of nasty things, so I wouldn't say it doesn't work!

Why don't you have your oil tested after 10,000 miles and let us know the results?
 
Gary I've been searching all over creation for a Frantz filter. Do you know if they're still made? My dad ran them on his trucks in the 60's - they work great! I even talked to a guy yesterday that knew Mr. Frantz. He has one but won't sell it. He has it in his personal museum of rare old stuff. I heard that old forklifts used them. I need to find a forklift graveyard now! I have a filter that's supposed to go down under 1 micron but I know the toilet paper will keep the oil cleaner than this one does. I'd put TP up against anything today! The oil in dads trucks never got black! Craig

The Amsoil BMK-11 by-pass system is a "universal" mount that can be used on any vehicle, or stationary engine. It has no specific application. It adds a remote By-pass element to the existing oiling system, but uses the OEM "Full-flow" oil filter.

The Amsoil BMK-15 is a "dual remote" unit that is specificly for the Cummins application, however, it only applies to the
engine and its needs. It does not have the complete mounting parts specificly for the Dodge/Cummins truck. It does have the adapter for the Cummins engine to adapt it to the OEM filter housing.

There are many different ways to install these units, and everyone has there own idea's, which is good!

It has been my experience with the BMK-15 "Dual-remote", in mounting the adapter to the OEM filter boss, the tow lines coming from the adapter will end up in different locations due to the threads of the adapter.

This makes the oil lines from the adapter end up different in each application, and in some cases the oil lines can rub on other components causing the lines to rupter in time! Make sure you check this out!!

Mark, you are correct, the full flow filter on the Amsoil Dual Bypass mount has a smaller inlet diameter. The full flow filter (SDF26) is of the same O. D. and length as the OE filter. The BMK-15 is an engineered system (application specific) that required a tremendous amount of research and development... the inlet diameter has proven to be more than sufficient. As side note, the Amsoil SDF80 full flow filter is a direct replacement for the OE full flow filter.

I'm really impressed with the high quality of the Dual Bypass system (except for the block adapter). I purchased the trick billet aluminum block adapter from a fellow TDR member "CPFF". #ad

Ted, the "analysis" idea is a good one - but would really require a before/after test to be meaningful...

C Shomer - as far as I have been able to determine, Frantz is no longer in business - at least I couldn't locate an Internet address...

My dad used a Frantz filter on his cattle truck for years, with excellent results - I was impressed enough with the Frantz to use it on several gas engines I built up over the years, and finally on my Cummins. Time will tell what the results will be...

Guys. . I got the "first unit" shipped about two weeks ago...
Ted did a very nice job on this adapter bracket. .
He also made up the 90* fitting steel braided teflon lines for me
A-OK on the set-up. .

I am not as worried about my 6b as I am about my DT444E however.

I think the cummins will run with gravel in the crank...

I am setting up a group purchase of the Frantz bypass oil filters. There are several great bypass filters on the market but this one seems to be the best bang for the buck.

As far as this product goes my grandfather and father swore by them. We used them on the farm on some very old yet pretty reliable engines. I didn't think they were still available...

The manufacturer is local and I will go to his shop and prototype an install that is Powerstroke specific. ie fittings are correct to take oil from the brass port at the cooler and return at the port along the side of the block. If you want to enginner your own install, the manufacturer doesn't mind if we mix and match the kits as long as they go to the same address (mine, I will re ship at cost... ) If there are enough of us we might be able to get a little better deal.

put "frantz filter" (without the quotes) in the subject line. I use this to filter the incoming email to a seperate (non work related) folder.

Please don't use this thread to bash bypass filters, or downplay the frantz filter If you don't like the frantz by an amsoil or gulf coast. From my limited research they are both excellent. I believe a bypass filter is pretty cheap insurance regardless of which one you pick. I just want the people who pick the frantz to group together for a little better price...

Great Chris - hope you get lots of takers - I just received my oil sample kit from Blackstone yesterday, and as soon as I can get an oil sample ready I'll send it in and report back with results. I've got about 4500 miles or so on the 15-40 Shell Rotella, so should be a good test - about 1500 miles of that was pulling my 24 ft. fiver... I have both the Frantz oil bypass and the K&N air filter - so the critics will have some interest on my oil analysis too no doubt...
