Finally found an Amsoil dealer - right in my town!! Met him at an RV show and was talking to him about the Amsoil By-pass kit. The cost is $360 Canadian.

I'm curious to know if any of the members are using this kit and if they ever change their oil or just rely on filter changes, oil analysis and top-ups.

There was an excellent article in the last TDR issue covering Gulf Coast filters just wondering if the same would apply to Amsoil.

Thanks,

Richard

Bypass Filter

Hey Dodger, I just put mine on last week. I also got a bracket from a guy in MD that fits over the battery so it is all contained within the engine compartment. Can't offer any help on how well it works as far as engine wear goes, but I am hopeful that it will prolong engine life. I have had my truck about a year now and have 32000 miles on it so we should know in a few years how well it works.

I will say that I have had oil leak problems from the attachment that fits on the spin-on filter plate. I was able to remedy the problem with 2 turns of teflon tape around the threads prior to assembly. The leak was between the fittings where the hoses attach, not the spin-on plate and the engine. I can email you some pics of my setup if you are interested.

richard,

Yes I have the Amsoil by-pass, and have over 139,000 miles on only one oil drain! I utilize the BMK-11 "Single" remote by-pass with the BE-100 Filter element. I also do an oil analysis every 10,000 miles. The first time I drained the oil was at 105,000 miles after installing the oil and by-pass system, then I installed the HDD 5W-30 Diesel oil. I was using the 15W-40 HDD& Marine oil along with the "Duel-remote" by-pass the first 105,000 miles. Here is a link you can look at that will show how I hooked it up.

Also a link that will show you what my valve train looks like after 129,000 miles on the one oil drain. www.1gr8oil.com/dodgevalves.html

I'm undecided about wether or not to install the Dual remote or Dual Guard system. What's your opinion on both and which would you recommend. Would the Dual Guard filtration system be over-kill? Which By-pass filters should I use with the Dual Guard and Dual Remote system? Are there any oil pressure concerns with either filtration system?

Do you make a modified oil fill cap for the 24v trucks?

I have the dual remote system, but if I had it to do over again I would go with the single bypass. There are trade-offs either way; the dual remote makes filter changes very easy, but also has more impact on oil pressure than the single bypass.

I believe the Gulf Coast and Franz filters work well, but they also require more frequent filter changes than the spin-ons from Amsoil or the replaceable element from OilGuard.

I have the Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass oil filtration system on my Ram... and like it very much!

If I had it to do all over again I would do exactly the same thing! :)

Dodger22, I have the dual-bypass on my truck. Also had it on the truck before this one with 110,000 clean as a whistle.

Thanks for your replies guys! For those who have the dual by-pass did you notice a drop in oil pressure or a longer delay in getting a pressure reading.

Richard

Richard, I did see a drop in oil presure at idle about 5lbs. At highway speeds about 1 to 2lbs drop.

Idle-30 to 33lbs

Highway-39 to 40lbs

I did switch from 15w40 to 5w30 wt oil which I think was the main reason for the drop in presure. I plan on running this oil for about 20,000 miles then switching back to 15w40 to see the differance.

More questions

With a bypass filter can you get longer drain intervals from organic oils ?

If bypass filters are so good at filtering the oil, and provide hundreds of thousands of miles on a single oil change why don't the engine manufactures OEM them ?

and why don't large fleets like TPS, JB Hunt, Dick Simon, and others whose livelyhood depends on the longevity of their trucks use them ?

I was already using the 5W-30 oil before installing the dual remote, so any pressure changes I saw were due to the system, not the oil. My oil pressure at idle is essentially unchanged, but at operating speed and temperature it seems to be about 10 psi or maybe even 15 psi lower. Remember, this is based on the "factory" gauge, which is not well marked and of questionable accuracy, so who knows for sure what the real number is?

My intent is not to throw stones at the dual remote system, but just to say that there are some pros and cons, and some (possibly including me) may be happier with the single bypass system. The vast majority who have the dual remote are very happy with it.

With my dual bypass unit my oil pressure went down about the width of the needle. My oil pressure at start up seems to build sooner with the synthetic 15w 40 hdd marine oil. I would think you could extend the drain interval with dino oil also just not as long and of course monitored by oil analysis.

1tuffram,

I recommend the BMK-11 (Single)By-pass on the Dodge/Cummins simply because of the space as well as the hook-up of the adapter on the OEM "Full-Flow" filter boss. When the BMK-15 (Duel-remote) is connected to this OEM filter boss, the fittings off the adapter will end up in different places on each and every engine. This puts the hoses coming from the adapter at different angles, which then will cause the hoses to come in contact with other things aroud them such as air conditioning lines etc. Some times after installation, these lines will move a bit and then when they come into contact, will chaffe and cause the lines to rupture. Have had two different people have this happen to. Now when this happens, the oil flow is so high(Up to 8 gallons per minute)the engine will run out of oil real fast! The single remote by-pass is connected differently which only allows about 5-6 Quarts every 5 minutes to run through the hoses, but the hoses are not routed anywhere near other things that would cause them to rub or chaffe. The two systems when installed do exactly the same thing, and that is clean the oil very well!

Yes the oil fill caps can be modified to allow the returned oil to go back into the engine through the cap. Here is a link that will show how to modify. www.1gr8oil.com/oilfillcaps.html

In my opinion, the "Dual-gaurd" system is "Overkill".

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the input, I never thought about the lines coming off the filter adapter issue. Don't they make swivel type fittings for cases like this so the lines can then be angled anyway you want?

What size by-pass filter you recommend (BE-90, BE-100, BE-110)?

I was thinking the biggest which will fit in the space. I assume all the bypass filter's efficiency rating (micron) are the same, just the larger the filter, the more wear metals it will hold. Is there a down side to running the BE-110 (beside extra cost and maybe limited space issues) over the other 2 by-pass filter?

Amsoilman and1tuffram,

The issue of the Amsoil block adapter on their Dual Remote Bypass system was NEVER an issue with me because I purchased the trick billet aluminum adapter from "CPFF" (TDR member and infrequent TDR BB poster). BTW, CPFF stands for: Cummins Powered Fast Ford. :D

Anyway, the trick billet adapter from CPFF is worth it's weight in gold! It is O-ringed and can have the inlet/outlet oriented in any direction you want, thereby easing hose routing issues. The Amsoil counterpart is a cheap cast aluminum piece that I personally wouldn't consider using on my own Ram. Sorry, JMO. Additionally, I fabricated a supply and return hose from Aeroquip -08 AN Teflon/braided stainless steel hose and steel fittings with billet aluminum hose clamps/separators.

Works like a champ, looks like a million, I can change both my filters easier than anyone else can with their filter in the OE location ( :D ), I have NO leaks or weeps in the entire oil delivery system... what else can I say?

how 'bout this 1tuffram...

I use the Amsoil BE-100 bypass oil filter and the Amsoil SDF-26 full flow filter.

The BE-100 bypass oil filter is the most common filter of the three (BE-90, BE-100, and BE-110).

I have my two filters mounted on a custom billet aluminum wedge type mount. This allowed me to mount the filters up high at a 12 degree angle from horizontal (bottom of filters sloping to the rear)... just above the sway bar but below the oil pan. Talk about threadin' the needle though!

I have had exactly ZERO problems with this setup in over a 1. 5-2 years of use. :D

1tuffram,

I am aware of the machined adapter that CPFF makes, and it is THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN!

He also makes a mount tha goes around the passenger battery. I just like the single unit by-pass(BMK-11)using the BE-100 by-pass element, as it is less money, and most anyone can install it. However, one of the biggest reasons I like the single remote, is the fact that only about 10 percent of the oil flows through the lines at any given time, and only one of the lines has pressure (Inlet side). The return line essentialy has no pressure.

Hope this helps,
