I am looking to buy an BMK25 bypass filter and AMSOIL synthetic 15W40 synthetic oil. I also am getting ready to place my truck in storage while on a 6 month deployment in the Navy. If I change the oil prior and add the bypass filter will I have to change it when I get back or should I be good to go. Or is it better to change it out after I get back from deployment. Also I would like to know, with the bypass filter and synthetic oil how long in between oil changes is it. I know that it makes sense to put in a bypass filter to keep the oil clean to prevent wear and tear. But I want to know if there is any other gains. How many miles have some of you put on your truck between oil changes after putting on the bypass filter?

I would change the oil/filters prior to deployment. The breakdown products in the old oil can attack softer metals... bearings, aluminum, etc. Run the fresh oil through the engine for a few minutes prior to storing the truck. When you return turn the engine over a few times by bumping the starter for a second or two to pump some oil through the block prior to actually starting it. Also put in some fuel stabilizer... PS, Standyne, Snake oil... .

unless you are going to run twins the bmk21 is a lot better filter setup. use the lf16035 or bt7349 main filter and the 110 amsoil. on your 01 you can get 20,000 miles between main filter change and 40,000 between oil change. do not change the 110 until it no longer flows oil. this is the point it filters it's best. we have found the best out of the way place to mount them is on the frame or bed brace near where the cab and bed meet. it does require you to buy one hydraulic hose for the extra length

When you installed the BMK21 did you return it to the oil pan, the valve cover, or the fill cap? And how much of a pain in the a** was it to install? Did you have to use the 1/4 in adapter or is it the correct size for the normal T fitting?
 
we return ours to the fill cap. i make my own hoses and do not know what t fitting you are talking about. it takes me about 30 minutes to install one

i just read my first reply. now i understand your response i make most of my own kits using bypass filters used on my big engines. i still have two or three amsoil kits in use on some older trucks.
 
Has anybody found a good easy place to install the bypass filter in the engine compartment? I really would like to keep everything in one centralized location.
 
I have the Amsoil bypass system on my truck. Put it on in 2000. It is located under the driver side door and I change the oil and filters every 10,000 miles. Most will tell you to get oil samples and go that route. I started that way but it always told me that I did not need to change the oil. I guess I am old school and for me oil just needs to be changed so I came up with the 10,000 mile figure because of the extra filtration I was getting and using synthetic oil.
 
I agree on changing prior to deployment, and to keep the filter out of the enigne bay. That way you can run the EaBP-110 and it works as a small cooler as well, vs dumping more heat into the engine bay.

I have used the BMK21 and the eabp100 cartridge which provides 98. 7% filtration of 2 micron particles, since the truck was new, 100,000 miles ago. This is more than adequate since the primary wear particles are 5-10 microns. Filtering particles smaller than 1 micron may actually filter out beneficial additives. See recent articles in the TDR magazine. I change the baypass filter every other oil change. I use Valvoline Fleetgard oil. I use magnets on the bypass filter body.

The filter is mounted on a custom made piece on angle iron mounted with 5/16 stainless cap screws and nyloc nuts to the alternator bracket through existing holes in the bracket. The angle iron is 2 1/2x1 3/4, 4 1/2" long, cut so that it provides a vertical plane mounting surface. I cut a piece of 1" thick delrin to use as a spacer to allow the filter to hang clear of the alternator. The drain valve allows oil samples to be drawn for analysis.

This is the cleanest installation I have seen. It is easy to service and utilizes otherwise wasted space in the engine compartment. Either eabp70 or eabp100 filters will fit above the turbo pipe.
 
I am thinking about mounting the filter to the top of the skid plate on the passenger side of the transfer case with the filter opening facing forward. Any thoughts on if this would be a good or bad place to put the bypass filter. I have tried other places, but the bottom of the filter hangs to low. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
Let me tell you what I have done. I just returned from my 2nd deployment and each time I have changed my oil prior to deploying. I have been home for 5 months now and I am still running the same oil. I also use the bypass system. Change oil and do not worry about it.

Just installed the BMK-21 bypass filter assembly on the inside of the driver side frame rail. I routed the supply line from the plug on the top of the full flow filter assembly and down the passenger side of the engine, across the top of the transmission. I routed the return line up the driver side of the engine to the oil cap. Had some difficulties drilling the hole in the cap. Am probably going to end up ordering the AMSOIL cap for the truck. It is kind of nice knowing that I don't have to change the oil for a real long time. Pictures of where the bypass filter is installed and installation of the hoses to folllow. Thanks for all the suggestions and help on deciding how and where to install the Bypass filter.

Nice clean set up!

Two questions: 1) What is the valve at the oil fill cap?

2) The feed to the filter is tapped into the top of the factory full flow filter? Or do you have an adaptor to the original factory full flow port?

(I guess that's really three questions!)

The valve is for taking oil for a sample, thats the bypass return.



The oil filter head already has 2 1/8" NPT ports on it, so thats where most folks take their oil feed for a bypass.
