Hey you G56 experts, I went with AMZ/OIL's 9.9 pint fluid refill and ordered 5 quarts of the Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 for a friends 13 DRW. Not even close to the fill hole! Really sucks because we had to go to NAPA and pay $4 per quart more than my cost. So it took 6.5 quarts to fill to where it was running out the fill hole. Truck was setting on my level shop floor.

I did a search online and came up with the same 9.9 pints. Seems way off to me!

I assume this should be ok as he does not tow heavy.

At photowrite's suggestion, I am running redline MT 90 which my transmission shifts better than the amsoil Torqueshift I had in it for 1 year. I haven't driven it with the MT 90 in freezing weather though, so I don't know if it acts different in the cold. I have the fast coolers, so mine takes more than 6.5 quarts. I overfill slightly through the shift boot to make sure the front bearings are lubed going up hill. IIRC, I've got 9 quarts. The fast coolers take an quart each, but they also allow a 1.5 quart overfill because they reach way above the fill hole.

Full is 1/2-1/4” below the hole, so spilling out the hole is overfilled and why it took more fluid. It doesn’t hurt it to be overfilled a little thou.

Thanks! It was about 1/2" below the hole with 5 quarts. So sounds good having the 1.5 quarts extra.

The ATF that was drained out was very dark along with the transfer case, possible OE fluid at 100k?

His truck is VERY dry underneath! He loves it and gets 22 easily on highway trips driving at 60-65 with 3.42's.

He had to have RED to match it's Big Brother.

It’s always been with all my previous trucks to fill to the top of the fill hole , that’s what I’ve always done . Still do with this Ram , haven’t caused a problem that I can see so far .

Before owning Dodge or Ram that was the standard “full” level, but for some reason Dodge/Ram has full below the opening. I don’t do that, I just fill until it spills, but it’s always been odd to me that that’s what they put in the owners manual.

I got a little caught up with that on my rear axle fluid change , trying to guess where that 1/4-1/2 was. Just did my transfer case ,and front axle, filled until they both started to spill out, like I have on any other axle or transfer case .

I dont know if y'all remember the prefilled debacle when AAM axles first came out on 3rd Gen Rams in 03 where the fill spec was 1/2" below fill hole +- 1/2", if I recall correctly. So the range ended up being from 1" below fill hole to the fill hole. I always do the fill hole too. Some 03 trucks had problems with insufficient rear axle fluid from the factory.

I'm old and forgetful, so help me if I got it wrong.

Cheers, Ron

Ron, I know we have different trucks and everyone is discussing how to fill up the differentials by checking the fill hole. This is one reason I like the Mag-Hytec diff covers, you use a dipstick to check the fluid level in the diffs. The dipstick is also magnetize to catch metal debris that you can wipe clean. The drain port is on the bottom and the fill port is on the top with the dipstick.

I think Geno's was selling a rear Mag-Hytec cover with a slight gage for a while. I don't know how will the sales were on the cover but it seem like a good idea!

My question for those that are trying to fill 1/4-1/2 " below the fill hole, its pretty tough, why worry about it. As said in a previous post I did get caught up trying to stay that 1/4-1/2" below when I did my rear axle about a year ago. I abandoned that idea here recently doing the front axle ,and transfer case , I just filled to the top of the fill hole . I think I read one guy made a dipstick to check level. To me its just as easy to fill to the top of the fill hole, and be done.

Jim,

We're singing in the same choir! All my Ram trucks have had Mag Hytec Differential cover, except my former 09 4500 and my current 17 5500. Unfortunately, Dana 135s don't have differential covers, or they would too.

Cheers, Ron

They did not show the sight glass version in the product flyer.

Sold this one to my friend for $145, 1/2 the cost of a new model.

Ive got the AFE raw diff cover on my truck with sight glass and dipstick and couldn't be happier. I'd love to get into the new banks cover with all the research that he did on it but i gotta get someone to buy my AFE first lol..

After owning MagHytec and now the OE aluminum cover I think I will stick with the OE. I have one more MagHytec on the shelf like pictured above.

I have preferred customer pricing (not sure how that is different than wholesale) with amsoil and buy my filters and some lubes there.

But my preference for my G56 is to use ester -based POE oil rather than PAO oil
.
My concern is that the PAO's in amsoil could (over time) shrink the seals causing leaks. Since my transmission lube only gets changed every 4-5 years, I chose Redline. It is a bigger production to change the transmission oil in the G56 because i like to remove the stick shift and pour in an extra quart through the top. And doing so means removing the center console above the shift boot.
Just jack the passenger side and you can add the extra qt. Easy.
Concerning the trans flush my DTT and I know Goerend torque converters come with drain plugs. I'd drain 14 qts out of mine. It's a pity that manufacturers don't spend a buck a use that feature.
