From what I have been told, HD motor oil contains phosphorus which is harmful to yellow metal used in synchronizers. Another choice is RP Synchromax which is formulated to go in transmissions (synchronized) and transfer cases and it is 100% friendly to synchronizers, it is suggested to replace ATF and motor oil in transmissions. It is fully synthetic and desingned to be a gear lube instead of using motor oil in a synchronized transmission. I just got a case and put it in my NV-241HD. Now my w4d engagements are 100% grind free. I dont know where to read about ti on the web but if you send your email address I'll send you the Adobe file that describes it.

I feel much safer having a oil designed to go in a transmission than using engine oil there.

Beware: The only approved oil is Texaco MTX (1874), ANY other oil puts your warranty in jepordy.

-- email address removed -- put synchromax in the subject line and I'll email the info.

The Texaco MTX is a fully synthetic 5W-30 motor oil. Cross the API spec on is. The sticker on the side of the transmission can not be enforced by Chysler according to federal law. Go on the FTC web site and look up the Magnusson-Moss Act. In layman's terms it states that an OEM cannot require a consumer to use an OEM part or fluid in order to maintain warranty coverage unless that part or fluid is provided free of charge.

Time and money? In the case of Amsoil products, I've enforced the M-M act. It took one 3 min phone call. Bam! Done deal! Warranty coverage provided! Don't be intimidated by an ignorant service manager at you local dealership.

This is interesting, does Amsoil back you up somehow? If so how?

It seems that we are at the mercy of the OEMS and their STAFF lawyers. How did you prevail? TIA

BIG DIFFERENCE between some wimpy service manager trying to blow off some minor warranty claim (any specific details you'd care to share?) and a serious high $$$ outright refusal that forces an owner to either pay up for repairs outta their OWN pocket - or go all the way with M-M...

Yeah - big difference between THREATENING to use M-M, and actually DOING it, and a "3 minute phone call" hardly qualifies!

and SO FAR, I have YET to find a SINGLE individual who's gone all the way with M-M - win OR lose!

And TD sez:

"I think YOU dont get it, unless you can get into small claims court YOU must pay an lawyer. "

Yeah - BUT, in larger, high $$$ cases, you can't USE small claims court due to being over the dollar limit for small claims - so ya either FISH, or cut bait...

I bought a new 1996 Seadoo PWC from a dealer who told me "point blank" If I used any other 2-cycle oil other than the Bomardier oil, my warranty would be VOID! I told the sales person as well as the owner of the store to "PUT IT IN WRITING"!

At first they said they would, but then talking a few minutes longer, they would not do it! I was very mad and when I returned home I called the 800 number for Bombardier customer relations and told the man on the phone what had transpired at the dealership. He said,
They can not tell you that, as it is against the law for them to say that! He then asked what kind of oil did I want to use? When I told him Amsoil synthetic, he chuckled, and said, "that's probably the best oil you can get for a 2 stroke oil. [End Quote] Needless to say, I have been using it since, and will continue to do so.

Best of luck in all your choices, as we all have that right. Some people are just ignorant of the facts!

- and unfortunately, a growing number of them seem to be dealership service managers... ;) :D

OR, customers who think or propose that Magnussen-Moss is a quick, easy, cheap way to force a service manager to honor a warranty issue they have formally refused... :D

Been away from the pc for a few days. To answer the questions about using the M-M act, Yes, Amsoil will back you. They coined the phrase "extended drain intervals" and the publish independant oil testing results that show upto 40% less wear against all other major oils - and they name them right on there pruduct lables. They can back the statements but, an in house leagle team sure makes it easier when accusations arise. They will go to bat for anyone using there products.

My three minute phone call was to Amsoil. They took it from there. My wife had a Olds Achieva SC with a W-41 Quad 4 that (you guessed it) blew a head gasket. It had 36,600 rounds on it.

The service Mgr. knew I was running extended drain intervals on all my vehicles. He asked how many miles since the last oil change? I told him 31,600. He took it upon himself to not "bother" GM with such a ridiculous claim and deny me coverage. I knew @ 600 mile out of warranty I was pushing it, but, qaud 4's are noted for this and his only reason for denying my claim was the miles on my oil. He told me right out that they would fix it no problem if it wasn't for that. I used the service Dept phone to call Amsoil. It became a 3-way call between Amsoil, GM, & the dealership. GM did request an analisys be done on the oil. They fixed it & put new Amsoil in it at no cost to me. The results of the test on the oil showed it to be a better lubricant with over 30K miles on it than any commom, off the shelf oil, is when it's new.

I did also have a H-D dealership tell a customer Amsoil would void his warranty. I had him go back and get it in writing. He did and Amsoil sent a nice letter from leagle to the dealer. They called the guy and apologized, seems they were misinterpreting the warranty verbage. Hmmmmmmm.

I think the manufactures are quite aware of the M-M act but not openly informing the dealers. Especially in the rec industry. They make way more money in accessory and service sales than in equipment sales. It's hard to sell them a better product for the same reason - along with the fact that the manufactorer has them over a barrel accessory volume requirements. i. e. name brand lubricants.

I don’t recall ever reading about Amsoil backing up a customer like that. Cool. That’s encouraging. I was somewhat put off from some of the previous Amsoil bashing that has occurred on the TDR. When a product comes with an outstanding service reputation, it goes a long way toward selling the product. Several instances were about leaking seals “caused” by Amsoil or other synthetic oils. It would be interesting to see the outcome of that type of warranty issue. I’ll consider Amsoil in the future
