i put the amsoil atf in my g56. wow! all transmission noise is gone. it's been noisy ever since i bought it(7miles). at idle theres no transmission clatter. only concern is all the filings i found on the drain plug! it seemed a little excessive for a transmission with 5000 miles! i've only missed a gear twice!what do you guys think?... james

That don't look bad. Its not really as much as it looks like. remember as kid putting metallic dust on a piece of wax paper and putting a magnet under it, the dust takes the shape of the magnetic waves.

thanks for the tip on the Amsoil. I got around 4000 and its starting to get a noise of straight cut gears in 2nd.

g56

i just changed my oil to specialty formulations mtfglide oil. and my plug looked exacltly like youre plug. im not to worried about this first change. but i will be if it looks the same on the next change

Does it shift smoother? Mine shifts kind of notchy (2K miles). Did you use the universal ATF? I've been thinking about using the Amsoil, but I'm kind of hesitant because of the problems I've heard some folks have with their gear lube. What size wrench do I need to get the drain/fill plugs out??

it seems smoother. i've only driven it 10 miles since the change. you will need a 14mm socket allen wrench(good luck finding one! snap-on has them for 40-50$$!)fot the transmission and a 3/8 allen for the transfer case. transmission took like 6 quarts, t-case took 4..... james :D

I just want to also give a good report on the Specialty Formulations MTF Glide. At 500 miles I changed the fluid out in the G56 to Redline MTL given the good luck I had with it in my NV5600. The G56 definitely likes a thinner fluid because when cold it didn't like shifting from 1st to second at all. Once the transmission warmed up the fluid let it shift well. Today at 1150 miles I switched over to the Specialty Formulations MTF Glide and it shifts much better when cold and gives added protection over ATF +4. I would highly recommend it to G56 owners looking for something other than ATF in their transmission.

It will be interesting to see if the G56 performance runs all over the map with different lubes for different guys just as happened regularly with the NV5600... ;) :D

Transfer case took 4 quarts?????

2 quarts or little over 2 quarts is all it should hold.

Typo or am I missing something?

another source for allen head socket

I picked up a set @ the local autozone. I think ther e were about 4 or 5 in the set. 3/8 drive. Can't remember the price but i believe it was less than $20 for the set. Counter guy had no idea what i was looking for. Found it in the "specialty" tools(brakes i think), not with the regular sockets.

Or; find a metric BOLT with a 14mm size head. Jam a nut or 2 on the end to give something to wrench on and just use a 14mm socket on it. You will probably need to stake/weld/Locktite the nuts somehow, but this is practically free for something not used often.

did that with the 10mm bolt & nut welded [17mmheads] for the fill on the 5600... worked ok once, next time she snapped [many times ] best to spend the coin and pop for a proper tool.

if you have a 9/16" allen key, try it... ? 9/16" is just over 0. 0113" larger than a 14mm. . depending on how precise the plug or your tool is, it might work good

If you guys are snapping 10MM bolts to remove a plug your over tightening the plug on installation.

I agree it's nice to have a 17MM wrench.
