Hey all,

I want to switch to Amsoil in my '01 24 valve. I have 41K on the motor so I think it's still safe to switch. Let me know the ups and downs of this if any.

I looked for past articals but couldn't find Issue 10!

Switching should not be a problem.

I would reccommend using the Amsoil engine flush first to get any crud out of the system.

Good Luck

Ashley,

Now would be a good time to install the Amsoil synthetic. If you have done regular oil changes in the past, you should not need any engine flush, but that of course is up to you. I have installed the Amsoil engine oils in many engines with higher mileage and

no problems at all. You will definitely have more protection.

Enjoy your ride!

Ashley, do a search on Amsoil, you will come up with a ton of threads. I know a bunch of TDR members use it and love it. I'm a Rotella 15W40 man, mainly because of the smell :D

I have been using amsoil since 1974. The only problems i have heard about switching is when people switch on high mileage over 100-150k or more on vehicles they haven't cared about (using really cheap oil or never or rarely changing it. It seems that these engines are running on sludge or sludge is filling in the gaskets or the spaces in between the rings and the cylinder walls. Amsoil, being a super detergent, will clean out all the sludge, and these worn-out engines will start leaking oil, or using oil, or both. So given reasonable care for your engine, and changing oil regularly, you should have no problem.

Thanks to all that replied. I just ordered the 12 month membership and got 2 - 2 1/2 gal of 15/40 HD Syn. and some 20/50 Syn. for my '02 BMW R1150RT... Maybe it will take the surge out :--) :{

Add my vote to the "no flush" column, given your relatively low mileage. I usually suggest that the first change be done at a shorter interval when the new oil goes in, but at only 41k I think even that might be overkill. Do something that makes you feel good about it; for example, first time around you could change the filter again at 3k just to play safe.

(Amsoil 15W-40 user here, engine at 101k, most of it on Amsoil 5W-30)

Which is better??

Yea? What year Cummins do you have? Could I be using this leghter oil and be saving some mileage or would I be hurting the motor?

Ashley

Amsoil is good stuff, indeed. I'm thinking about switching to Rotella synthetic, mainly due to shipping costs for the Amsoil. I sure wish they would find a way to get it to us cheaper. And my wife is a dealer  I wish Amsoil were available at selected distributors, like say Wal-Mart Supercenters. I don't mind paying for the oil, I don't like the close to ten dollar charge I get to give UPS for a case of oil.

Shipping costs are there for sure... ... ..... on everything we buy! However, if you are anywhere near an Amsoil "product center", you can negate the shipping costs. There are 10 product centers around the country. When I get a very big order, I drive the 500 miles and get it, but then I usualy pick up 18-2000 pounds when I do.

Amsoil Switch

Well I made the switch last week. Oil still stinks like Rotella does but like some say on here "It's the smell of sucess". Hope there're right!

Anyway I was filling the oil filter before installation and I spilled some on the outside of the filter! OH MY GOSH what a pain to hold on to the filter after that! This stuff is slick!
