I may be the only naysayer with this bunch but why would you spend a fortune in synthetic oil when Rotella or Delo offers the same readings from Blackstone labs when changed at 4000 miles instead of 8000 with synthetic? I did this test to see if Synthetic really does make a difference.
The problem is the contaminates and particulate loading in the crankcase. The oil carbon loading <soot> in a diesel is high and these particulates accelerate wear. Changing the oil is the only way to get rid of these contaminates. Oh, I know the argument that synthetic hold particulates in suspension better and longer the dino oils do, but look at the cost. Delo changed at 4000 miles offers the same protection except for high and low temperature extreems at 1/4 the cost of synthetic.
I do believe that synthetics help and really do shine when used in sealed environments like a rear end or a gearbox where contamination is held to a minimum, but in a crankcase where contamination builds rapidly, their superiority is tenuous at best.
I run synthetic in my transmission and rear end but ,IMHO, it just isn't worth it in the engine.
