Hi,

Is the Donaldson ELF7349 better than the Amsoil Ea080?

For all of the drivers that don't really tow, when was the soonest, in mileage, you have changed over to synthetic oil (of any brand)? I have about 7,000 miles now and probably will have 12,000 by the time the winter rolls around. Temps. can get in the single digits, and I would like to use synthetic oil. I would like to use a 5-40 full synth in the winter. Would it really be too soon to change over?

i changed over to synthetics at right about 10,000km [~6500 miles] only towed a trailer a few times [towed my pop's work trailer] no issues. . my engine was well broken in before the 10k kilometer mark. . hard driving will break in your engine well [will also kill your economy]

Joe, I have a 1st gen Dodge/ Cummins, Have used Amsoil since about 15000 miles. Their 15W-40 marine, diesel oil pours at -37 degrees F. We have similar temperatures here, not the humidity. This oil works all year long for me. I would get a few more miles on your truck before you switch over. Leaks are the big problem. Synthetic oil has a homogeneous molecular structure ( all the same size), if there is a weak link with your gaskets or seals it will show. Try "Amsoil Diesel Fuel Modifier" It really works for cold weather fuel additive. I use it all year long, also, just more in cold weather. If you have your own business, you can sign up for a commercial account with Amsoil and buy cheaper than a dealer can purchase it. You just cant resell. GregH

There is no reason you couldn't change it over the day you bought it. There is no compatibility issue, there is no break in issue. My last two CTD's have gone to Amsoil 5-30 HDD series 3000 at 1000 miles. I run it year round with no issues and a 15k mile interval. I have been using the Donaldson filter.

My '06 Mega started out getting 13-14 mpg. I just checked it now with 25k miles on it and milage is up to 18-19 mpg. I also swapped out the differential and t-case fluids to Amsoil at 1000 miles. I think on this truck I will change to Amsoil ATF at 30k as well. I stuck with the dealer reccomended fluid on my last trucks because of the 7/70 warranty. Since the warranty on this trans is done at 36k, I am going to run what I want for the interval I choose.

Thank you for the replies so far ...

I've already started using the Donaldson. I just wish they were, at least, fluted on the bottom. I plan on holding off as long as possible before I switch this winter to full synthetic. Thanks again.

I've been using the Donaldson and just ordered the Ea080 and the Donaldson is a longer filter then the amsoil. Amsoil say's the Ea080 will filter better. The Ea080 cost more to.

I don't know where you're getting your informatiom on the cost between the ELF-7349 and the EaO-80, but the retail price is the same for both.

Thanks for the replies.

Wayne, which one do you think filters better? I do mostly highway and should have no problem going the full 15,000mi. between changes with AME 15w-40. I really don't want to do a bypass.

Joe, They are both rated the same as per ISO 4548-12. Amsoil's recommendation is 15,000/1 year in severe duty, so I think you should be safe at that mileage. If you get overly concerned, you could take a sample at 10K, and have it analyzed, then go from there.
