I have a couple of older, like 1970's, 855 ( 335 hp ) Cummins in my boat, I'm wondering if any of you mechanic types hane any experience with using amsoil in these older engines.

These guys like their oil, one leaks, I can see it in the catch pan, one burns a bit. I used Valvoline for a long long time, anytime I went into an engine it was extremely clean, as in no sludge. The dealer quit carrying it, I use Mystic now. Thanks.

the amsoil fluid is a great oil for any year or mileage motor, the biggest concern should be leaks and oil burning----how much do you want to spend on a engine thats wasting your good oil? the amsoil will calm down leaks and reduce oil burn off to a degree, but a failed part is a failed part and no oil will not fix it. good luck Oo.

I would NOT recomend using ANY synthetic in an engine that uses oil. The synthetics have a much higher flash point and therefore don't effectively burn so it builds up on the rings, valves, exhaust risers ect... . The synthetics are SOO slipery that you might see oil consumption increase.

Plus, it has been reasonably well established that various engine gaskets and seals in long service with dino oils CAN develop significant leaks when exposed to synthetics - maybe not a good thing on an engine that already has leakage issues...

Thanks for all that, guys, I do appreciate it. I guess I'll start running it in the truck, tho, this one's got to last me awhile. I like the longer intervals, the sand gnats around here make chores like oil changing a real fun time.

I concur. Used 0W30 Amsoil Series 3000 on my old gasser, and it was burning a quart every 1000 miles or so after about 100K miles on the old dino oil. I was using a high quality Universal Cooperatives Superol Gold 10W30 before. Dad and my Grandpa (RIP) have run Universal Coop oil in their farm equipment and autos as long as I can remember with no issues; I would say superior results. I would say these oils are a superior product, but unless you are a farmer, you probably don't know about them.

At some point after switching to Amsoil, I let it run low on oil, and started to burn excessively. I was running an Amsoil bypass and oil analysis was always good, but was putting the equivalent of a full oil change every 5K miles. Adds up, but have to admit, it beat the heck out of changing the oil all the time. Went all year without dumping the oil.
