Bought Amsoil synthetic 5w30 for the wifes Toyota Landcruiser. Truck has 120K miles on it and she drives it around 8K-10K miles per year. I have alway used Mobil 1 5w30 and changed it every 5K - 7K miles. Would I use the same change interval that I did with the Mobil 1? or would you run it longer with just filter changes at 5K mile intervals?

Thanks

Run the oil for 5k miles, change the filter and do an oil analysis. Do another one after 10k then decide if you want to go further. If the wear metals only ~double during the second interval and the TBN is still >5. 0, you should be fine. The useful lifetime of an oil varies with each type of engine and the way the car is driven. I would forget about 25-35,000 mile change intervals without a bypass filter.

You can see lots of comparative oil analyses in the forums at: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

The data will pretty much back up what I just said.

Sounds like an old truck, over 100k, probably not worth much any more even though you did use synthetic and changed relatively often. Why don't you just sell it to me and get her a new one? ;)

I would but I'm too poor to afford a new Landcruiser. Plus she wants a new VW Beatle :( That ain't happening ;)

Small world! My wife wants a new Beetle too.

Just in case you decide there are issues you hadn't considered ;) and you end up owning a new Beetle, a word to the wise: I saw one lock up the engine after fording water that was only about 4 to 6" deep. Apparently, their stock air filter snorkle draws cool air from just under the bumper - and that's low!

You can put something on similar to the RE-880 or BHAF's in our trucks (only much smaller, of course), that would draw air from just under the hood and make it much less likely that a rain event causes major problems.

(Sorry guys - I figured this was "general diesel" info or I would have p-mailed Pit Bull; I'll get back on topic now. )

what year is that cruiser? I have a 1973 that is currently under a ford smallblock conversion. With ford T-18 transmission and Jeep Dana 300 transfer case. The one ton axles will come in due time. I have a bit of a disease with cruisers, i always keep my eyes out for them.

Mines a 1995, last model that are real 4x4's, with the full floating solid axles front and rear. Whats funny is most have only been used as Mall cruisers.

oil question

Pit Bull,

I'm not trying to start a war here guys, believe me I'm not. Why did you decide to change from Mobil 1 to Amsoil?

Pit Bull,

What made you decide to change from Mobil 1 to Amsoil?

Please, lets not start a war here. I am just curious.

Wifey's 'Cruiser is also a '95, man that truck's a beast.

Heavy-Duty everthing.

Hers only has 40,000 miles. Spends most of it's time in the garage.

Her only off-road driving is turning around in the backyard 'cuz shes too lazy to back up the driveway. :-laf

This may not be the place to ask this but we have a new Volvo, is on the second oil change now. Factory says 7500 miles on a change, I won't go that far as the wife does a lot of short range driving where the engine doesn't get warmed up real good. I plan on doing a change every 5K until I switch over. How many miles should I drive it before switching to Synthetic? Want to be sure it gets a good break in.

You can change to synthetic on the first oil change on a gas engine.

Wow that is low mileage. I agree they are built like a brick **** house and the body style is going to be a classic. I wish mine only had 40K miles, but I will tell you at 125K miles ours should be good for another 125K miles without breaking a sweat.

Wifey and I car/truck/bike pool to and from work .

Her truck only gets driven when she's going somewhere I'm not, or don't want to take the dually, (whick ain't too many places:D )

It gets driven mostly in Dec, Jan, & Feb when it snows.

I'm gonna hafta take it 4 wheelin' one day when I'm off and she's not then park it back in the garage covered in mud. :D

Think she'll freak? :-laf
