I used a 3/4" to 1/4" bushing with a close shoulder nipple and a ball valve. I only put the handle on to take samples so it cant accidently get knocked open. Cost about 10 bucks and it is good for 300PSI. I did not like the Amsoil sample valve for the exact reason that is giving you problems. Give it a try.

I also changed mine out to a good valve. I used a 1/4 in. needle valve, plus used a cap to keep anything out.
It is a pretty sorry valve!

You could have saved time and had a safe way to get an oil sample by installing an AmsOil fitting.

Mine has been installed for about 6,000 miles and has not leaked a drop. If I can get my picture to show you can see how the return line goes to the fill cap. But I have not even had to tighten any fitting. I did not like the return line to the pan where I can't see it. You take the oil sample by removing the fill cap.

Mine leaked too. Had to take it off, and put the original o-ring plug back in there. Haven't had time to get out and shop at the Parker Hydraulics store for a new valve, and other assorted goodies.
Not only that, but both filters leak at the gaskets for over a 1000 miles before finally sealing, every time I change them. Makes me awful glad I don't have the filter block mounted to the battery bracket like a lot of people do.

Briar,
Stupid question, but I gots ta ask!

After you torque the filter down, do you back it off a hair?

I talk people out of that valve, not very impressive.

weber, my bad. i've got the dual bypass set up. the sampling port goes to the filter block. my filters leak a little AND i've got them mounted to the battery... oh, well.

hi, guys

i need your help yet again... . i finally installed the sampling port on my amsoil dual bypass system and took my first oil sample.

problem is... i installed cpff's (john strenkowsi) filter block adaptor on the same day and fixed one leak and installed the sampling port to start another!! it is coming right out of the spigot and it's as tight as it's gonna get. do these things normally leak or did i just get a bad one? if i can't solve it i've been thinking of a rubber cork or just twist tying a piece of plastic over it.

any other suggestions?

thanks

Another option is removing the valve altogether and getting your oil samples with the version that has the hand pump and hose that you stick down the dipstick hole. Talk to "CPFF" about them

I've mounted several of these in the past, and used the sampling valve installed in the end of the mount, but have not had any leak. I have had the fittings leak on the older cast alluminum mounts, but never on the billet alluminum mounts. I try talking people to use the "single" by-pass, and return the oil back through the oil "fill" cap like Lee Weber does. This makes for excellant sampleing, as there is nearly no chance for contamination entering the sample bottle.

The other suggestion I would have is to install a Fumoto drain valve (www.Fumoto.com) and take your oil samples there. I like the design of these new by-pass kits, except for the sampling valves. Obiviously everything comes with a price, but I feel this is one place they could have spent a few more bucks on hardware.

Wayne,

You have the wrong Weber ... Lee lives in Reno Nevada! I e-mail him about tribology stuff from time to time #ad

If you are reffering to taking your oil samples from a Fumoto valve installed in the oil pan drain plug that is a BAD idea. You will get all sorts or errouneus readings since alot of the heavy soilds will collect in the bottom of the pan and will give you flase readings as to the quality of the oil. You need to get samlples from the middle (or close to) the oil level in the pan through the use of one time suction hose or from the sampling port on the dual bypass filter or if you have the single version, from the engine return line.

The sample valve on my dual unit leaked until I applied 20-40 lb-ft of torque to close it. Hasn't leaked since. I wouldn't be averse to replacing the sampling valve with a ball valve, though.

The first filters I installed on the unit leaked until I tightened them some more. replacement filters have hardly leaked. I think there may have been an imperfection on the seating surface.

Where I had the worst leaks was with the widget that installed where the OEM filter went. Vastly over-torquing it and the connectors solved most of that.

There's a bit of oil here and there; I've never known a diesel not to leak oil. But I never have any oil dripping on the driveway.
(One valve cover leaks a bit, but I'll get that fixed the next time I have the valves adjusted. )

After hearing the headaches created by the sampling valve - and considering how little use it'd be getting, I came up with a clean alternative.

I took the sample bottle to the hardware store and found a rubber stopper (cork like thing) that fit the bottle. Then I bought a long and a short piece of small diameter plastic hose. I drilled 2 holes in the stopper and forced both hoses into them. I have the long tube poke out the other side a little.

To sample I put the contraption in the sample bottle, put the long hose down the dipstick tube (after running the engine long enough to insure the oil is well mixed), and suck on the short tube until the bottle is 3/4 full. Cap and send. No placing the bottle under flowing oil - very clean.

Only cleanup: let the long tube drain.

you're a genious ted!! the only cost would be getting a new long tube (gotta be next to nothing) every 10kmi for sampling to avoid contamination..... i like it!
