I am currently running the Amsoil Series 2000 75w90 gear lube – it has about 75,000 miles on it. I was going to replace it before a long trip at the end of the month and cannot find the Series 2000 gear oil on the Amsoil website and my local Amsoil dealer does not show it in his product guide.

Did Amsoil discontinue the Series 2000 gear oil? Should I go ahead and replace it with the regular Amsoil gear lube?

I do very little towing and the lube still looks clean – Should I even worry about changing it right now?

Thanks in advance

Jack

The SVG SEVERE GEAR 75W 90 says normal driving 100,000 miles and severe is 50,000 miles. The rest of the gear oils are longer life than that. Your local Dealer might recall the normal change intervals with that particular oil. -Jason

If it is synthetic and I believe it is, I would not worry about it. Synthetic oil does not break down. I changed from 4:10 to 3:55 gears a while back and Amsoil was put in and I doubt it will ever need to be changed. Years ago before synthetics were invented when you went for a grease job the rear end was checked and if need be some was added, never was it changed. If a rear end started to howell then we did something about it. But that was the old days. I have a lot of confidence in synthetic oil. My Nissan (a 4 banger) has 209ka on it and I changed oil every 25,000. It does not smoke or use oil. The only reason I changed oil every 25,000 was because I felt the filter needed changed, not the oil but all the oil would run out if you did not drain it first. I did not use Amsoil. I used Mobile One 15w50 because Amsoil was not readily available. WallMart does not sell Amsoil. -- email address removed --

Thanks guys - so JOdell - as an Amsoil dealer you are confirming that they did discontinue the Series 2000 gear lube?

I rechecked my mileage on the Series 2000 and it's closer to 80,000 miles - just for pease of mind I might go ahead and change the rear.

The front diff fluid still looks like new - still nice and blue (the color of the Series 2000 when new).

The rear diff is not nearly as blue as the front diff. but when I put the Series 2000 in the rear I added the mopar L/S additive (not knowing at the time that I did not need to with the Amsoil 2000) that may have something to do with the color difference.

FWIW - I can check the color/condiiton visually because I am using the Mag Hy-Tech front and rear covers.

I have only been an AMSOIL dealer for three months, so I don't know that gear oil. I just checked with my direct jobber, and that gear oil has been discontinued for some time now. -Jason

I believe the series 2000 was replaced by the Severe Gear version of gear lubes a few years ago. . Very good quality gear lube. I have used it in 3 trucks and been nothing short of thrilled with its performance.

With 75k miles on the lube, I would recommend changing it out.

Synthetic oils do stil break down, it just takes much longer and much more to do it. They are much more durable, but not indestructable! Besides, with that amount of mileage, its a good idea to change it just to remove any wear metals that will be suspended in the oil.

Jason should be able to help you out.
