I'm probably going to switch over from Delo to Amsoil in the crankcase however, I can't seem to find any hard data on the 15W-40 in comparison to the Series 3000 5W-30. Amsoil is very proud of the stats for the Series 3000 and reference test results in multiple places, but what about the 15w-40? I'm just wondering how good it is compared to the leading off the shelf stuff.

The weather here in Vegas doesn't exactly warrant the use of cold-flowing 5W-30

:D

15W - 40

On my last truck I used the Amsoil 15W - 40 heavy duty marine and Diesel oil. like you Florida is no place to worry about cold weather characteristics of you engine oil. Just feel good about using the recomended oil weight and a good synthetic. As soon as my 03 gets good and "broke in" I'll switch to the Amsoil, will probably use Rotella in the meanb time. No expert opinion, just "gut" feeling!

I use the 15-40HHD in my truck year round in Michigan. No problems down to minus 10-15, unplugged, started fine although loud and smokey. I got about a . 5-1 mile increase going to the Synthetic over dino when I switched. Oil has been in for 8k with great analysis and recomended continued use. This is with me driving mainly short trips. I do have a by pass filter though.

CHeck out the Amsoil Web site, They have info on every product that they product. U just have to click on "show picture/info" link on the purchase pages for the different oils.

I prob would not go with the 5-30 in Vegas, may not be thick enough for the heat, but others may have more info on that.

Maybe try PMing Amsoilman from TDR he is a wealth of knowledge on Amsoil and their product.

Hope this helped

I too ran the 5-30 but switched back to 15-40. And since then I have gone back to Delo. As you start running higher horsepower you put more soot in the oil so I felt it would be to my benefit to run Delo and change more frequently. :)

I too ran the Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 for 20k mi. before deciding to switch back to Amsoil 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine. I change the oil and both filters (full flow and bypass at 10k mi. ) and it works out to being virtually the same cost as 20k with the 5W-30 plus 1 bypass filter and 2 full flow filters.

I also switched from 5w-30 back to the 15-40. I found that I would have to top off the oil about twice as often. I felt like I was getting to much blow-by using a thinner weight oil. IMHO

I may switch back this winter. I'm planning on driving out to Colorado in January and due to the cold temps I may consider switching back to the 5w for just winters. People have stated better mileage using this oil (which makes sense being a thinner weight) and the drive out to CO ( appx 4000 miles Round trip) would be beneficial in terms of MPG.

I don't think it gets that cold in Vegas. I would stick with the 15-40 for ya.

I have run both. I started with the 5w-30 and ran about a year with it. I loved it except for the fact when it was hot it would have more blowby than my driveway cared for. So I switched to the 15w-40 and have run it for about year and a half. I like it except when it is cold out ( I know it is fine but after using the 5-30 I definitely noticed the cold start difference). I know it is fine but since I change twice a year anyway starting this winter I am going to run the 5w-30 in the cooler months and 15w-40 in the warmer months. In Vegas I would use the 15w-40 year round and save the money.

What's a good baseline for change intervals using the Amsoil 15-40 WITHOUT a bypass?

I've been changing out my Delo every 4 to 4,500 miles and analysis has been good.

Rblomquist,

You should be able to go 3 times longer than you are now going on oil drain intervals, which would put you at 12,000 plus. If you do oil analysis, do it at 4, 8, then 12,000 and see where you stand. I think you'll be surprized.

I'm yet another one who tried 5W30 and went right back to 15W40. The metals wear numbers in my oil analysis showed the 15W40 worked considerably better. This was running 20,000 mile oil changes. I felt the 5W30 was too thin for the 105 and sometimes 110+ we see here.

I have also tried Delvac 1. During the first 10,000 miles Devlac 1 gave the best numbers, but then fell off during the next 10K. The Amsoil 15W40 performed the best overall during my 20K mile intervals.
