Need to change out the oil in the differentials on "Old Ugly". They presently have Amsoil 80W-90. Been thinking about the new severe gear oil. Its been a few years since the oil has been changed. Any Amsoil experts out there that would care to comment on this? I will also call Amsoil tech support. Thanks,GregH

Called tech support. They said no limit slip additive necessary. It is part of the additive package. Unless I spring a leak, It will be the last gear oil change fer "Old Ugly". GregH

I just changed my diff oil and used AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90. The instructions on the back says use the slip lock additive if chatter occurs. The last time I used AMSOIL back there it wasnt Severe Gear but it did chatter. So I just added the additive and all was well, I think these trucks have their own personallity as far as the additive goes. Some like it, some dont need it.

One thing I like about AMSOIL is that if swallowed you do not have to induce vomiting.

Mike, Thanks for the input. Gonna do the rear diff as soon as the oil arrives, 75W-110. Will do the front diff next summer. Got some service left in that one. Had a leak and needed to replace an axle seal. GregH

Update

After getting most all the issues and electrical gremlins cured and finally getting a little road time. The truck has chatter problems in the rear end when powering up and around a sharp turn on a hill (switchback). It is also noticeable when driving in town where you are required to make a sharp turn under power. I added one tube of friction modifier to the Severe Gear oil upon installation. I am going to call Amsoil, Monday, and see what they recommend? More Friction Modifier? I checked the tire pressure and matched the two rear tires very closely @ 50# running empty.

BTW, The mileage has not suffered in the least, still 19+ with mixed driving including 4X4, using Bio Diesel mixed with #2, winter blend. Will do more thorough mileage check after chatter problem is settled. GregH

If you chatter too long around corners, you'll be doing limited slip clutches. I have never had any luck adding friction modifier after the clutches start to chatter- I end up taking it apart and redoing the clutches. Good thing is they are REAL easy. Hardest part is crawling under there to get it all apart.

Changing Clutches?

Dan, That sounds like a project? Where do I get some information and a step by step, hand holding procedure to do this? Thanks! GregH

Update

This was not a fair test of the Severe Gear oil. My Diff is rapidly going south and am looking to do a LS Clutch or a Dana Trac locker, Dont know which as yet. However I intend to reinstall the Amsoil Severe Gear oil. GregH
