OK after getting my auto rebuilt under warranty at 24K I put in a BD valve body,ProLock TC and BD preasure lock. I have changed the ATF every 12K with Quakerstate ATF+3 and everything has been great.

This time at 60K I put in Amsoil Universal ATF by suggestion of several. The truck now shifts softer, sometimes it takes awhile for it to build presure before I can go and the worst part is after just driving it around town the temps are about 20 degrees higher. .

What gives? Is this normal? I am getting ready for a RV trip and thinking of going back to the old ATF. Please chime in your opinion.

Many Thanks, RogerLed

I use Amsoil ATF in my 89. My temps never go above normal no matter how heavy the load. Shifts are not soft with the shift kit. But when I crank it up in the morning I DO have to wait until the oil pressure guage comes up to normal before the transmission will work. I consider this good insurance against starting out before my engine is fully lubricated. :D My transmission shop doesn't sell Amsoil ATF, but they strongly recommend it!

I made the switch

and the Amsoil Universal ATF is great. Lower temperatures and very smooth shifts.

you may have a problem if your seeing higher temps :(

I agree with Bob Wagner!

Roger, several NW BOMBers have stated they have experienced softer shifts after switching to Amsoil synthetic Universal ATF+4. Everyone has also seen reduced transmission temperatures too (myself included). In fact, my highest recorded temperature (on my SPA trans. temp. gauge) was 226 degrees F. (sensor on the cooler "hot" line). This was during an extended period of idling in bumper to bumper traffic (read: traffic NOT moving) where I really should have shifted into neutral :)o). Normally I don't ever see over 190 degrees F.

Higher temps

My Issapro gauge starts at 140 and hardly goes above that unless it is hot out side or I am towing. When I saw 170 it concerned me only because I only see that in 90 degree wx and have to drive it pretty much to get there. The highest I have seen soo far is 200. I was hoping to benefit when towing through hot areas, it does not make sense to me why I should see higher temps so I will dirve it some more before I change back.

Thanks, RogerLed

Stick with your Amsoil, higher temps or not. It will provide MUCH better lubrication at high temps than fossil ATF. Are you comparing temps before mods with temps after mods? Higher pressures can result in higher temps. I replaced my belt driven fan with a pair of side by side PermaCools and lowered transmission temp, engine temp, oil temp, and increased oil pressure. :D

Roger,

the wait before you you are experiencing could possibly be from the torque converter draining back into the pann. I have seen this before several times n these transmissions. To help you with this, just put the selector in nuetral for the first twenty seconds after starting in the mornings. This will allow the fluid to pump back into the TC.

To be fair

I might have hit the panic button too soon. Drove the truck around some more today and then checked the fluid level... it was down. Added another quart and she shifts better, checked again and still low. It takes a long time to pump out all the air after a complete drain and re-fill. I will report more after I get levels stabilized and run in hotter WX.

Thanks everyone:)
