Exhaust tip

I have just bought a 03 CTD. I have been debating on switching to synthetic at 5000 miles. I haven't been able to anybody in the Pacific Northwest that has any experience. I've read alot on the internet. Is it a good way to go? And do people really wait until 25000 or 50000 miles for oil changes?

By The this is an awesome forum:cool:

First off welcome to the board. If you are considering running synthetic you should allow the motor to break in for more than 5,000 miles before changing. Most guys prefer to run the dino oil for 20-25,000 miles before switching. This supposedly allows the rings to break in better.

As for the 25-30,000 mile oil changes. A lot of guys do it. You need to figure on changing your filters at about 5,000 miles and topping off with fresh oil. You would also want to do an oil analysis. This will tell you if the oil is breaking down and needs changed.

Synthetic oil...

Hi David... Cummins suggest not switching to synthetic oil until "the second oil change". I would probably go to the third if you are using a really good oil now. Sad to say that some of the oils out there (and some of the oil changers) are not really what they should be, when I bought my truck, it was filled with an extra 3 quarts of a not so great 5W-30 oil... it never gets that cold around here !!

Those engines take a long time to break in... I would suggest a great oil filter and probably a magnetized drain plug during the break in process!!

When you do change over, you may want to use the CG-4, CH-4 rated oils. Amsoil's 3000 series or the Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Marine 15W-40 (temperture permitting, 10 degrees & above) !! Those are awesome oils and properly changed with a properly maintained engine should take you around the world 20 times or so )

If I can be of more help to you, give a shout !!
