Like it's said, everyone has an opinion, and as far as I'm concerned, no one is wrong. Do what works for you.

My last truck went 419,000+ miles using Amsoil and my present truck has 75,000+ miles on it in seven months. I use Amsoil everyplace you can put it. I also don't change oil until the oil analysis tells me to. It hadn't done it yet.

I'm sure a lot of you won't agree with the way I do things, but I believe the results speak for themself.

EB...........

What was your truck that went 419,000 miles? Just out of curiosity if it was a cummins what finally went south? This is not an oil question, dont worry. Just a curious CTD owner.

Oh my goodness!!!! Gettin' all fired up... ... I agree with the point about $. 99 oil that is API rated. Would you use it? Not I. The main point with Amsoil and their formulations is that they are bent towards extended drains. I'll give you an example. My dad passed his '92 d250 with cummins/auto down to me when he bought his 2001. I use to stay on his case ALL the time about routine maintenance. I did convince him to switch the enigne over to Amsoil at about 30,000 miles. He commenced to run the truck about another 30,000 miles before he changed it or the oil filter. It seemed like every time he needed more oil, he had gone another 25 or 30 plus thousand miles since the last change. I wanted to SCREAM!!!! Somehow though, he never did switch the transmission over and kept running auto part store transmission fluid (API rated no doubt..... sorry, heh-heh) in it until I got it. At 220,000 miles the transmission was slip-slidin' away but the engine was OIL TIGHT! It leaked none and used next to none! All I could do was shake my head and say "how 'bout that!" I sold it in a tight and the guy who bought it is still driving it around! Why, I bet he's even using API rated oil (sorry... ... . there I go again!... . gosh). There is an interesting set of articles in Motorcycle Consumer News magazine and I think Sport Rider also just within the last few months about the comparisons and claims of synthetic oils. I was very satisfied with Amsoils standing in these evaluations. I think Royal Purple did well in some but nowhere near all categories. Certainly not near as well as the price they ask for it. I say Amsoil did it first and they do it best for me. Also, for the guy who was concerned about them being an MLM company... ... ... . please... ..... how else were they gonna market their product in the early '70's against a bottle of Quaker Paste costing five or six times less than theirs? Amsoil built their rep on word of mouth, that's how!!! Ahem!!! I'll respectfully bow out now. Good night all!

To CumminsPuller

My last truck was a 95 Dodge 3500. Had the 230 HP plate from TST in it. (don't remember the torque), BHAF, full gages, complete DTT trans. put in by INARUSH76.

No, the engine wasn't going south, the rest of the truck was. Engine and drive train was still going strong. Front end shot and needed rebuilding, vacuum pump and power steering gone, A/C problems, ect. To many rough oilfield roads. It was just time for a new one. I make my living with my truck.

I got $9500 for my truck as it was because of the engine and transmission. I still see it on the road. It now hauls produce out of the Rio Grande Valley to Houston weekly.

At this time I have no way to scan in the tag, if things change I will let you know. This issue of AMSOIL vs ROYAL PURPLE is pretty lame. Any issue of one oil vs another one, or synthetic vs conventional oils is mute. We all have our opinions, they are based on our experiences, our own expectations, and hunches.

I and probably most other members have no way of quantifying any claims, true performance gains, or reduced wear. I can say I have seen lower temperatures on both engine and transmission, with the use on synthetics, this is true. When I use to run my dragster, I did see lower bearing wear, and the turbocharger bearings stayed cleaner, this is also true. But nothing is scientific, they are all subjective claims. Did I see less wear because I expected to see less wear? I don't no. It's like the guy who puts on a louder exhaust and thinks it's going faster now, cause it is louder. Oil selection seems to be a very personal thing, people love there trucks (cars, motorcycles, ect) and I guess they want to feel they are doing what is best for them. Kind of like buying your kid soccer shoes, you picked the ones for 89. 00 instead of the 49. 00 pair. Are they any better, will he score more in the expensive one?? Oh knowns, but it made you feel better buying him the "better" more expensive shoes. I think oil is in kind of in the same boat.

Where can someone find these test results with RP and Amsoil? I've tried to get any tests made with that oil, and nobody has given me a page. I've even tried to get a racer friend, who uses it in his race truck, and he can't get a copy for me. My stack of Amsoil literature is higher than 2".

He then switched to Amsoil 2-3 years ago using the 15W40 HDD/Marine oil and continued his sampling regimen. There was enough difference in the sampling results to convince him the Amsoil was the way to go. Maybe he'll get on here and go into it in more detail.

Actually Vaughn...

it was Red Line 15W-40 (100% synthetic) Diesel engine oil that I was using, not Royal Purple. My only first hand experience with Royal Purple synthetic lubricants is with their Max EZ synthetic power steering fluid which I switched over to earlier this year. If I'm not mistaken, it is the ONLY 100% synthetic power steering fluid on the market. And yes, I already know about the mock synthetic hydrocracked Synpower. ( )

Although I had been a loyal Red Line user for the preceding nine years (before switching over to it in my Ram), after oil analysis reports proved that it wasn't much better than the 15W-40 Valvoline/Cummins Premium Blue I was using as break-in oil, I went looking for something better. I finally ended up with Amsoil 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine. However, I would be willing to bet that the Royal Purple 15W-40 Diesel engine oil is every bit as good as the Amsoil I'm using. :)

Not trying to bash anyone or put you down but that is a poor example of trying to get accross why synthetics or API standards are better or worse.

First you use an engine that is designed to go 300,000 miles before an overhaul, some have gone upwards of 500,000 and a million miles.

Second you use a transmission that is designed to go 100,000-150,000 miles before rebuild.

Oops! Yes Vaughn, I meant to write Hazelwood. I guess Hazelton stuck in my mind from watching Ron Hazelton on HGTV for a few years... a few years ago.

See? two wrongs do make a right!

Royal Purple verses Amsoil

Sorry, I have been gone for a week after dropping the oil controversy issue into the fire. I have contacted the Marketing mgr. for Royal Purple and will try to get some myth killing data if possible. If there is anything that I can't stand it is hear say because it equates to= BS. I know how good Amsoil is because I have vbeen using it for three years but if there is something better that is competitive priced, then I want it. Facts gentlemen not opinions are what gets the prize and promotes better products. Loyalty to a product is idiotic unless,"$$" HMMM!, there is good reason, thats just good common sense. More to come because I just happen to live in OIL PATCH Houston TEXAS and Royal Purple is only 20 miles from me. I am pursueing the TRUTH if it exists just because I can't stand hear say. Data comming soon. :--) :D
