I have a 93 cummins with 260k on the clock that i am thinking about changing over to Amsoil. Does anyone think that with this many miles on petroleum oil, that there might be some adverse effects?

With that many miles, chances are you may get some oil leaks, or oil usage. This is because the Amsoil is a very highly detergant oil, and it could clean out any sludge that may be making a "False seal" within the engine, as well as remove the carbon buildup in the ring lands, which could increade oil consumption.

As a sidenote, I have installed the Amsoil synthetics in vehicles with over 100,000 miles. In some cases there were no ill effects, and in others, the filters had to be changed several time in very short mileage intervals, then the oil consumption went down. I have only had one occasion where the engine began to leak oil around the side cover on the valve lifters, drivers side of vehicle.

Thanks for the reply. I guess i should save it to put in my 04. 5. With 260 on her, i hate to take any risks. I'm working on the million mile club without a rebuild, thats what had me considering Amsoil.

Yep, Amsoilman nailed it. Switching the engine over would be good for the engine, but you'd have to be willing and ready to deal with the detergents in the AMSOIL exposing faulty gaskets and the potential for a lot of crud coming loose and ending up in your filter often. Great for the engine, but has the potential of being a costly hassle for a while until the engine cleans out and maybe some gasket replacements. I used to have a 1986 Ford Ranger with a 2. 9 V6. When I got my hands on this truck, it was 16 years old and had been neglected like crazy. I did the AMSOIL engine flush before switching over to AMSOIL, and I never had a leak from that engine. Maybe I got lucky, but just because your engine has been around the world a few times doesn't mean that switching over is going to more of a con than a pro. It may work out just fine, but understanding the risks and WHY the leaks can happen is important.

I switched to Rotella-T 5w-40 synthetic at 227000 miles. I then had leaks from the valve covers and burned oil in the winter after cold start up. I changed the oil after 3000 miles and it seemed like the filter had more crap in it then usual which tells me that the synthetic probably cleaned up the sludge left from other oils. I am surpised to see that my oil seems to stay cleaner after that first change and I plan to switch over to Amsoil with a Bypass filter later. For right now everything else is Amsoil as it is just easier to go to Walmart for Rotella in the engine. :)
