I heard from a friend this evening that if you are using AMSOIL in your motor, and you have over 300HP that you should change the oil every 5,000 miles.



Anybody ever heard of this ? I have not heard or read of it till this evening, and am concerened as I use AMSOIL and am at just over 300HP.

Nope... never heard that one.



I now have over 300hp and I am changing mine every 7500... Not because I have to, just cause I really don't have the time to do oil analysis. I haven't had any problems yet...

Thats a new one on me too, how did your freind arrive at that?

It woulkd be interesting to here his logic. I have over 300hp and do oil analysis everythird change and it always comes back with the recommendation to extend the drain time. I usually run about 7,500 t0 9,000 on oil. Dave;)
 
I can't imagine the actual HP number has anything to do with oil breaking down. What I can understand is that the higher the HP, the more fuel, and the more fuel, the more soot, and if the soot is not being removed effectively, the need to change the oil sooner might arise. IF this is the logic used 300HP seems a little premature to apply it. Maybe 500HP :D

Your friend has his "brands" mixed - up!! My motor is well over 300hp and the oil has over 120k on it and oil analysis at every 15k has said "good to go another cycle". As soon as I get the report back ok, I then change both filters. :D :D

Scott, Alittle over 300HP????? by what 100 HP??? Don't sweat it I just changed my oil at 60K, not because it needed changing the oil checked out great still, I just wanted to get the newer Seri 3000 5W/30 oil in instead. I do run a bypass filter though... .
 
Check out this link on the Noria board and see how Amsoil can be toasted in 17K in a high performance gasser. It depends on how the vehicle is driven and the amount of stress (i. e. heat) that an engine puts on the oil. The Cummins in general is not hard on oil. 5,000 miles is too short unless you spend all your time in truck pull competitions.

The 300 hp is probably somebody's "guideline", based on knowing that high HP diesels dump more soot in the oil. There are several things I don't think can be overstressed:



1) You just must do some oil analysis if you really want to know the "correct" answer. Every engine, every set of driving conditions, places different demands on the oil. Otherwise you just collecting a bunch of opinions, some more conservative than others. With a sample pump kit, this is extremely easy to do. The Noria thread is proof of this.



2) Bypass filters are the way to go. I like the Oilguard, and the Amsoil single bypass. Instead of worrying about whether you can go 7500 or not, unless you're getting very unusual analysis results, you'll soon be thinking 10k, 20k, or more.
 
I ran over 30,000 at 300hp, no problems.

When I jumped to 370 injectors with the plate full ahead, (stock turbo)the soot levels were to high,(for me) at 15,000.



Keep in mind the right foot as a lot to do with soot levels.



I would suggest oil samples for any oil on BOMBed engines, whether your changing oil once a week or not. It is nice to know what is goin on in there. You may catch a head gasket leak before you get in real trouble.
