Amsoil?

I'd like some feed back on amsoil. I have 260,000 mi. on a '95 dually, 5 spd. A lot of my trips to the coffee shop are less than 5 mi. I'm currently using Exxon XD-3 Extra 15W-40. Anyone know about this oil? Of course I'd like the best like most people, so should I stay with this or switch to amsoil, or what?. Thanks for all the advice in advance. If you got 260,000 miles out of the oil you are using, Why switch? I don't see any reason for you to switch. Jeff

I don't know anything about the exxon product. I do know some (NONsynthetic) oils will start leaving sludge in the engine. Synthetics will clean this out and cause some engines to start leaking or burning more oil (because the sludge actually acts as a sealer for the joints, rings, and cylinder walls) I used to be a Amsoil dealer starting in 1974 (just have a commercial acct now (don't sell it) and I would see people saying well I won't try it in my new car, but how about my old beater. Because Amsoil is a super detergent it cleans everything out (all the sludge that has been sealing engines with a few miles on them) (Not saying that 275 000 (or what ever you have on your engine) is many miles for the million mile best pickup truck engine we have) I might stay with the exxon on this engine.

I agree, you are likely to uncover some leaks by changing this late in the game.

I'm running Amsoil, and I like it. BUT no way I would change brands or from dino to syn after 260,000 happy miles. Keep going with what you've been using.

I agree too

Amsoil is a great product, I run it for all of my fluids in my truck, but I also only have 20K. I have heard many stories about the "sludge plugs" being removed and broken up by the detergent in Amsoil and engines leaking like a sive. I agree with everyone else on this one though, If it aint broke dont try to break it. U would probably have more trouble that u would like and would have a bad opion of Amsoil then.

Rear axle seals leaked after adding AmSoil

When I first got my truck with 76k miles, the first thing I did was switch the rear differential to synthetic AmSoil. In our ice cold winters, it's important to get things lubricated and running as quickly as possible. I could tell a big change in how much free'er the differentials seems to loosen up and get rolling down the road.



However, within about 20k I ended up replacing both of the rear axle seals due to leaks.



I'm fairly confident that the free'er flowing synthetic softened or cleaned up the goop around the seals and started them leaking. The seals were $7/each and no problem fixing.



90k miles later and no additional problems.



BTW I concur - Stay with your current oil.
