What to go sythetic, not sure what oil to go with.

have a connection to getting amzoil, so i would like to go that way. . ??

thax for any help.

We have the exact same vehicles and I run Amsoil 15w40 in both of 'em. O. K. , I have a 76 CJ, that's close enough!! I'm not an Amsoil salesman, but I'm sold. I've been running it for 15 years.

What part of Maine i. e coast, inland or extreme northern? Most folks think the 15-40 is the way to go but from a former mainiac I'd say if you live up north or pretty far inland you may want to consider the lighter weight just because of how cold it can get for those few weeks in Jan/Feb.

Look, if you are going to spring for synthetics, then go with the best. Get the 5-30 series 3000 heavy duty diesel oil, you will not be sorry and the truck will continue to run at it's best. I have run the Amsoil for the last 5-6 years, and before that I ran the Mobile one(back before they watered it down). Synthetics work, and work well. Go with the best, weather it be engine oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, or grease and don't worry. I don't think it makes much sense to run anything but the best their is.

I hope your AMSOIL connection has told you that for $20 a year you can become a dealer yourself. Or for $20 for a year or $10 for six months you can become a Preferred Customer. Either way you save about 25%. Makes sense if you are buying $50 or more every six months which you probably will taking into account the volumes of lubricant these trucks use.

thanks for all the info,

hey rblomquist, MDI- Southwest harbor. still gets cold in winter, saw -20 some mornings last year!!! not much like vegas huh??

should i change weights for summer and winter???

Soooooooo cool! Another oil war!

AKAMAC

How can you see this as another Oil war? The topic had to do with a "BRAND" name product, and he was asking for an opinoin on the grade of the oil in that BRAND!

It's probably going to boil down to what you feel the need for. Since it doesn't get and stay super hot in Maine you could easily go with the series 3000 year round. The only thing I'd watch for is that I've read a few posts here saying folks didn't like the consumption they experienced with the 5-30 so they ended up switching back to the 15-40. Just check it out if you think you'd like the lighter weight version.

Of course I prefer having a heavier base for protection but that's just my preference. The 15-40 has a pour point of -47. I never remember it getting colder than that in Maine but it does get "nippy" huh.

I use series 3000 year round no problems yet good oil. I also use a amsoil dual bypass filter I change the main filter every 7500 miles and the second filter every 15000 miles. oil samples all show normal. below normal soot in oil. good luck in whatever you decide to do. oil tests say oil could be left in longer but I don't feel good about that personal choice. and yes I am a dealer also. amsoil in trans and f+r diff's also. truck almost at 100,000 miles.

I think 3000 series will be fine in the NE and other northern areas that don't see real high temps.

I tried Amsoil Series 3000 in my last truck and my wear metals went up noticeably, higher than what I experienced with Dino (Delo 400). I went back to the 15W40 Amsoil and the great oil analysis numbers returned. I attribute the poorer numbers with the Series 3000 to the 105-110 summer temps we had when I was running it (also had those temps with the 15W40). I
