1978 Mercedes 300D help

OK, I am now looking at a new Liberty CRD. Along with my wifes TDI, my Cummins, it would make a nice addition to the stable eh? Does anyone have one here? Interested in performance, mileage, any faults? :D

I did test drive a couple and it seemed like a solid little rig though... . 4200 lbs. and all.

MPG for city looked like 20-24 , while hwy. could be as high as 32ish.

After reading about some of the problems, it brought back bad memories of dealing with DC over the dreaded right hand pull. I'd start twiching if I had to deal with a "act like a problem does'nt exist" attitude again.

The Subaru in the garage is a flawless performer... ... . it's just to bad that the VIN # on it starts with a J ... ... for Japan, and it's wearing on me.

A lot of money and they don't come in standard transmission. The wife won't own a vehicle with an automatic, so we stuck with the gas liberty.

Jeep Liberty CRD

We have a 06 Jeep Liberty CRD and it is the funnest little schit to drive! Of course I had to add a 60hp predator chip to it, because that is what I would do to any diesel right??? :-laf Anyway, my fiancée drives it around town for her job and gets 23 mpg. I think the thing rides well, the auto shifts flawlessly and it has a butt load of torque. 4,200 miles. .

When we go out, it is a choice between the Liberty and a 1998 BMW 740i... I pick the keys up for the Liberty everytime! :D

I hear ya, it was a super fun couple of test drives, a wee bit bouncy of a ride, but it's a Jeep.

It seems like guys are getting them for 21k on up if the bargining is laid out right. The one thing that really made me wonder was why they went from 7/70 warranty to a 3/36, that's half. Dealer told me it was an incentive and my reply was that it was a lack of confidence on thier part partially aimed at getting you to buy an extended warranty.

BILLUA is right though, this thing makes some good power... ... . even stock!

The wife's just turned over 20k on her 05 . The egr valves are the only big problem. Just had the orig replaced, for some reason it was causing a hissing-grinding type noise. The latest flash did the trick with all drivability issues. She gets 23-24 around town and 26-28 hwy with a best of 29. 4 on a 450 mile trip. The worst problem is finding a dealer who has worked on them. We bought the first one our dealer sold and the techs knew nothing. A dealer that has seen alot go through would be the key. . Overall a great little rig. . They have gotten a bad rap from the lack of dealer knowledge. Smokey burn outs are not a problem.

Handle in the dirt?

I guess my next question is, how do they handle on dirt roads? I will have nine miles of dirt to drive one way, it is county maintained (when they feel like it) but washboard and rough rock base is norm...

I am thinking of doing the test drive this weekend. . :D I have driven a Grand Cherokee limited and it handles great, of course I would like to range around 35 to 60, the old truck walks around too much in the corners. .

In stock form they are a little choppy. My cousin has a 04 gasser Liberty that he put I believe 245-70-16 BFG's on and just raves aout the difference in ride. I have not ridden in it yet but don't doubt it. A larger tire made a huge difference on my old Wrangler.

We put bigger tires on my wifes 04 gasser liberty also. More for a little better ground clearance than anything. You can't get a much bigger tire on than stock, I can't remember the size I will have to check and re-post. The gas liberty is pretty good on the dirt roads, seems to have good weight distribution.

I have heard several die hard Jeep folks say that the CRD will be available in the Wrangler for '07. If it is also available with a manual transmission, they can count me in as one of their first customers! A sad note is also that the inline 6 4. 0L engine is history for '07, to be replaced with the 3. 7L V-6. If they want any of the die hard loyal folks to buy new Jeep Wranglers, the diesel had BETTER be an option to offer the low-end torque that will not be available with a V-6.

Yep, the Wrangler will have a diesel in the 07's. But it won't be available in the USA :(

Why not? That is STUPID!!! The engine is already available! Maybe I can "special order" one! Is it available with a manual transmission?

Same with the GC

The Grand Cherokee has a diesel in europe. Toyota has a cool little four runner with turboed diesel available everywhere in the world, but here! It really is a stupid move by the EPA, maybe next year with our diesel going to ULSD they will come... . :(

CF, I just read an article yesterday that the Grand Cherokee is coming over in 07 with the bluetec diesel technology but it sounds like it's going to have a nightmare of emission stuff on it. And not just the particulate filter it's got something on it that has to be refilled by the dealer. I'll try and find that article.

It looks cool.

But, I think I would wait a couple years on that one, until they get all the bugs worked out. I looked all over the state for a slightly used 06 CRD, it was a no go. I found a 02 Grand Cherokee with a 4. 0 six and a Selectatrac transfer case, so I can choose two wheels if I like. It had 50,000 on it, and a few door dings (which I like, so I do not have to worry about new scratches), I picked it up for 2G under book. New rubber, and brakes, clean unit.

I will wait till 2010 to get a 08 Bluetec... . Ha Ha... :D :-laf Thanks guys, but this time, I have to bite the bullet and get a gasser. But at least it is a inline!! :D
