anyone here ever bid on Govt auctions?

Things my mother taught me

I don't like replacment windows. It takes more time to put in a whole new window but I think in the long run it is better. IMHO

Reason one: With the new window yo do not have to paint the trim anymore.

Reason two: They dont look like replacements!

Just my . 02

Thanks for the reply but have you see the Andersen renewal windows? They have a very thin frame and are custom depth thickness for the window they are replacing, they are also made from Fibrex, I am also looking at the 400 series but they have much thicker frames, but though they are much cheaper. With all the complex stained wood trim on the inside I do not think new windows are an option for me.

If you have a lot of stained wood trim in the house you might very well be better off with the replacements. I have seen them and they are very nice. If I had that much time and effort in the trim and wood work I would more than likely be doing replacements.

I guess I should have said I am a little biased about windows... My inlaws have replacements and say that I should be putting them in my house instead of going through the trouble of new windows:rolleyes: They think they are the best, they even say that the ENTIRE old window was removed before the replacements went in:rolleyes::rolleyes: Now that the old frames are starting to rot they still stand behind the "great and wonderful windows":rolleyes:

Note: these great and wonderful windows are not Anderson and look to be worth about 1. 27 each. :-laf

They only sell them installed. They also offer full frame(replacing the existing frame) or insert(inside the old frame). Fibrex isnt as flimsy as you think.

P. S. i work for Renewal and im replying to this at work LOL:-laf

Actually I went to Home Depot yesterday and they sell the Andersen Woodwright, it is made from Feibrex and appears to tbe the same window as the Renewal. Home Depot price was $500 for the window, Renewal wanted $1200 each installed, of corse they started out at about $1500 a window, but they had a 15% discount for spring and an additional 7% if I signed that night.

Actually the Woodwright is made in the same plant that i work at and there are some differences like the Renewal frame is a hollow extrusion made of fiberex and the woodwright has a wood core. Home Depot is the contracted home improvement chain that carrys Andersen windows.

P. S. are yard truck has a 5. 9 CTD

If you want to do the work yourself, look at Pella.com,and find out more. Pella does not look like a replacement from the outside, but with the frame thickness of their wood framed windows, you will need to have a transition moulding on the inside. Pella also has a fiberglass line.

The website is pretty cool, showing installation proceedures. Pella has installation available, but a skilled carpenter or DIY with patience may be able to do it. My suggestion is to do ONE window and see how much work it is,how the finished product looks, ect. As with any window, the installation aids are critical to your success. So is your own skill and understanding of installation quirks you are likely to encounter in a replacement situation,The thing I liked most about Pella,is that the exterior trim options allowed us to make the replacement windows look just like the ones in the new addition.

Not pushing one brand over another, just giving another option.
