2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Annoying squeak/squeal

when driving I hear this squeak/squeal coming from the back I think but I am not sure- it seems like it is in the tire axle area-just chirps along - any ideas?

My 01 started to squeal at almost exactly 40k miles. My friends 02 with , yes you guessed it , 40k miles is a squealer. We traced it to brake pad/caliper. We both have about 1/3 to 1/2 pad left everywhere. We tried cleaning, lightly surfacing discs and pads, and lubing caliper slides. This helped for about 1000miles and now here we are again (squeal). We are checking out a few sets of performance friction pads. Dont know if this helps or not but just what we found. :-{}
