 I have a 99, and after 7 years I just got around to checking to see if I have the #53 engine. Well you guessed it, I do. (I know, I know, better late than never. )

Other than the dreaded dowel pin problem, Are there any other issues I should be concerned about with the #53 engine? Thanks guys.

the dowel is not necessarly part of the 53 block . the main problem is the cracking . it occurs on the right hand side between 4&5 cylinders down low just above where the oil pan connects to the block. if you have a standard it will be easier to see. on the auto the trans oil cooler will hide the area. lots of info on this site on this subject. hope this helps. I have a 53 block with 396,000kms. still all ok.

When mine cracked it was between 5 and 6 above the freeze plugs. If you start smelling hot antifreeze with no obvious signs take a look on the passenger side of the block.

I read here or in the tdr mag that there is a sharp edge in that part of the block that should have had a radius on it. ONE of the casting plants (there were 2?) had the bad cast, and not all of the bad casts will crack. just a lil' rusty thought.

Ive got 160k on a 53, and knock on wood, no prolems.

Thanks DavidC

what is the main reason for the cracking problem in the #53 block, and what makes the 56 better.

The 53 block is known as a porous defect, others know it as a thin casting that cannot tolerate the vibration waves that a diesel generates. The 56 block is a thicker casting. The 53 block reminds me of when GM tried to make a universal diesel using a gas 350 block.
