another auto trans question

Hey guy's wondering if you could help me out with this problem with my trans. My trans started hunting 3rd to 4th again so I checked the tps sensor voltage and found that it was very eratic as you moved the throttle back and forth so I replaced the tps and was hoping for a fix to the problem but it still hunts between 3rd and 4th. i checked the VSS and found that it was cracked and basically falling apart so I figured might as well change it hoping that was the problem,no luck! The one thing that is weird is that it seems as though if it is raining the truck doesn't do the hunting for the gears and works right maybe just a coincedence I have not a clue,Also my service manual sets the voltage for the tps at around 1volt I seem to remember that when I put the first one in 3 years ago that I set the voltage at . 75 for the base voltage . Thank's for any suggestions and Idea's

I'd try using some electrical contact cleaner on the TPS, speed sensor, and trans temp sensor connections. Use a little dielectric grease on them after cleaning. I had some intermittent problems that this helped with.

You have a bad connection in the harness some where as evidenced by things working when they are wet. Incidently, thats how you test for connections probems by power washing the engine and trans and checking the operation of the problem component. The water will seep in and make the connection. When it dries you are back to a connection that is corroded/dirty/bad and the problems come back. Get a tube of dielectric grease, start at either end of the truck, pull & clean & grease every connector you can find.



Its a major PIA to do but it solves a LOT of recuring electrical issues. Good luck.

Yeah, with your TPS voltage setting.



You can set it from one extream to the other. It depends upon where ... YOU... want the shift point. This setting will not make or break your transmission. If you set it way way off, then you'll have to back out of the throttle to allow for an up shift. I have driven it like this for quite some time. Kinda liked it too. I could go like a bat outta hades and then whenever I decided the rpm's where there I'd back off the go juice a bit..... she upshifts and then back into it once again. Provides for miles of smiles too !!!!!



If you wanna go the other direction... ... ... . The transmission will like, upshift at 35 miles per hour. Thats how mine is now... ... ... ..... so I have to disengage the OD manually with my new shifter mount button or... ... . she shifts up into OD very early. Now I can get rolling and "select" OD at will.



Either way works for me.

tighten the 12mm(?) nut under the bracket that supports the tps switch. Just tighten it until it's snug, not actually tight. Mine was loose, I tightened it, and the od has never, ever wandered again, and, it'll shift into od when the button is pushed, period, not dependent on the throttle position (unless it's ON the floor... ). I am so happy with the od operation now that I still can't believe it was (at least on mine) a little loose nut.



While yer at it, toss a 2nd gen gear shift lever (has the o/d on-off button in the tip) into your steering column. You'll never know how ya lived without it... . There's a pic of the thing in my readers rigs/diesel. If you need the 'directions' for the lever swap I have 'em and can beam 'em to you.

The range of setting voltage for these things can run between . 400 VDC and 1. 00 VDC... . that is the "no throttle" static setting. After that, the voltage should be

2. 25 vdc to 2. 75 vdc higher than the "at rest" setting.

In my case, I found that a static/at rest setting of about . 600 vdc was right on for my needs/shift point.
