All this 6 Speed talk is a little frightening, especially since mine's been in the shop for 18 days now getting a new transmission. Just so you know, my truck fried 6th, as well as some major bearings. DC wanted to fix the old transmission, but enough *****ing about it got me a new one ordered out. I should be back in business tomorrow (I've heard that one enough times to not have my hopes up too high), but I'm a bit scared taking a new transmission on a 600 mile trip on Wed. gonna have to go out tomorrow and climb some mountains and really work it out to feel comfortable with it, especially with all this wonderful talk of how one in three is good, and the rest are crap. I thought I was getting a stick, not just for the added power and the fun of shifting, but for the reliability. I hope that you guys can stay out of the shop, and the dealer runaround--not fun

the transmission is so bad on our 01 we need a clutch

just trying to make some humor, maybe these trucks need a bombing break in ????? so you have to worry about clutch more than the gearbox
he he he he
hope everything works out well for you all

MChilds, I know the phone number, but it is for dealers only. I would hate to get you and/or myself in trouble giving it out. You may want to go to or call your dealer and see if they would give it to you. Sorry.

Well, it is a little early to tell all is fine as I have only had a chance to put about 30 miles on the truck since getting it back together. It shifts very differently and does not grind shifting it like I always do. I hope it stays this way. It is more of a joy to drive now. The complete countershaft and all the stop rings with new stop ring bearings were replaced. Will keep you up to date in a few days.

The thing with shifting these 6 speeds is don't try to "grab" full fisted on the knob. instead, when going to either 3rd or 5th, push up with the ball of your hand on the lower side of the knob. I have found this as well as being a professional driver of big rigs, that this helps. I have ground it going into 5th a couple of times but I was "grabbing" the knob then.
Hope this helps.
Eric

I have 28000 miles on my 6spd and the only "grind" I have had was going into third when the transmission was cold. When it warms up... it shifts nice and smoothly.

All of you Oregon people, we need to get together and have a BOMBing session.

we have two 2001. 5 6 speeds and have had no problemns with them for the first 10000 miles. they are hard to get used to because of the tight shift patterns. i still go to 6th when trying to catch third, but the amazing thing is that it still wants to lug right along. i agree that the best thing to do is drain and check the oil at your initial oil change interval. break in oil is exactly that, whether its engine, trans or rear end lube. my dealer thought i was crazy when i had them change all the fluids after 5000 miles, but i felt better.
