... well, maybe... ;)

Dunno if this thread is better here or in the General Diesel forum - but since this install was on a '02 24 valve, will start here.

I have been totally happy with my BHAF - oil analysis showed low Silicon (dirt), and absolutely NO negatives.

BUT, I kept hearing the far out claims for the new Donaldson Nanofiber filters some guys are switching to, so decided to give one a try - here's the result:

SOOooo, now to put a few miles and an oil analysis or 2 under the floorboards, and we'll see if there's any difference other than the appearance... ;) :D

Did you just drill hole in the end of your new filter to install the filter minder?

I am wondering if I can do the same to my Proguard 7?

about how much did that filter set ya back? and do you have a part number avaible? Thanks man!

Rick

I think it was just under $50 - and it's a Donaldson with Amsoil's name embossed on the end - I think it's a #4510, but will check and try to remember to get back with the info.

And yes, I drilled a 3/4 inch hole in the end cap of the filter for the Filter Minder, just as I had with the BHAF.

(EDIT) Yup - it is a #4510 And any Amsoil rep should be able to sell you one...

Ditto... Give us the details. Also do you know if it outflows the BHAF

It's supposed to flow better AND filter better than the BHAF - but talk - and advertising is cheap - the real proof will be down the road and up the grades towing our 5th wheel - as well as oil analysis to check Silicon numbers.

And in case you missed my edit up above, the filter is a #4510, and available from any Amsoil rep.

I made the switch too...

I switched from the Amsoil filter in the stock box to the BHAF to get away from the oil-in-the-intake syndrome. Now I've swapped out the BHAF for the new Amsoil nanofiber unit. I dunno about power since I didn't do back-to-back dyno runs; and since I haven't installed my x-monitor yet, I don't even know if there is an egt difference. I DO know I like the sound of my turbo! :D

BTW, I am an Amsoil Dealer. I felt kind of guilty driving around with that paper (BHAF) filter in my truck!

Hey Gary looks good. I am glad you like that filter. I was wondering when I was going to see pictures of your setup all done. I like your bracket you made for it as well. -Jason

Gary, is that an open element filter similar to the BHAF or is it installed in the stock box. I'm using a Mac computer and for some reason can't see the photos. Thanks.

Yes, it's open element like the BHAF, a bit smaller in size and is sorta like a large somewhat flattened cone shape. It fits nicely in the space provided, and is less visually overwhelming overall than a BHAF. I had installed an Outerwears protective prefilter/cover on the BHAF, and it worked GREAT on catching lots of nasty stuff and extending the life of the filter - the filter element itself is still pretty much clean and white as new after over 2 years use - not sure whether to do the same on this element or not.

But PERFORMANCE is the bottom line - sure hope this one does!

HI Jason - yeah, was going to get more elaborate with the mounting bracket - but after a trial fit, saw an easier, but effective way. What's hard to see in the photo, is the half inch of rubber weatherstripping attached to the bottom bracket to cushion the element - it's all very solid and secure.

Is that price of $50 right for the 4510 filter?

Don't hold me to that price, I've had the filter for a while, so sorta fuzzy on cost - plus, they may well have gone up in price like everything else... :D

That is close the the right price. I can't tell you the price on here. PM me and I will give you the exact price. -Jason

Hey Gary what is the inside/outside diameter of the inlet on that filter? Just wondering if it will fit in the AFE Stage 1 filter box.

4 1/2 inches - I used a common PVC pipe coupler, it fit the filter perfectly, and also the OEM rubber duct to the turbo - installation takes mere minutes...

Well, Gary's Nanofiber 4510 looked so modern & clean I had to try one out also. .

Used a PVC pipe coupler as mentioned above. Flow is as good or better than anything else thats been on this truck. . This is an easy mod to keep things simple have good airflow and (according to the literature) have optimum filtering. As long as this thing keeps the silicone levels as good as previous filters, this should be a winner. .

Did a few test runs on the local freeway onramp test track. This is WOT without the fueling box turned on. The results are:

Scotty II w/ Uni filter & foam sleeve (only side intake, no 4" cowl hole) - 25 to 25. 5 PSI boost max.

BHAF style using a Big Honkin AFE PG7 conical filter (previous favorite) - 26 PSI max.

BHAF style Amsoil 4510 Nanofiber - 26. 5 PSI . With EGT's about the same as the Scotty (but not towing)

So far, this one is a keeper...

Thanks to Gary & Duluth Diesel.

I looked at the Amsoil website and it looks like they have two models that might fit. The EaAU4510 and EaAU4560. The only difference I see is shape, but it doesn't provide flow comparisons. The 4560 is significatly cheaper and would probley work.

Todd

Todd, The Eaau 4091 is also a good one to use. It is smaller than the 4510 and It has a 4" inlet and it has the filter media on the end of the filter. It cost more than the 4510. I have seen them on our trucks. Click on this and scroll down about half way and there is a PDF data sheet for comparing air flows. I hope that helps. -Jason
