Right now on my 98' I have 245/75/16 Bridgestones and they need to be replaced. I'm looking for a taller tire to put in there and maybe a little wider if the rims will handle it... . there 6. 5's. The 245's are 7. 5 tread width and 29. 5 tall if all the tread is there. While talking to Piers I thought he said he had 285/85/16's but there is not tire in a 85 series except 235's:mad: The deal is too good to pass by as I'm getting $140. 00 off from what I was priced at tires plus. If all fails I'll get the same size just cause the price is so good.

He probably meant 255\85R16 ?

You can go 235\85R15 or 255\85R16 or 265\75R16 or 285\75R16.

All will fit on your rims, with the 285\75R16 being a tight fit.

235\85 31" tall 8" tread width

255\85 33" tall 8. 5" tread width

265\75 32" tall 9" tread width

285\75 33" tall 10" tread width

all measurements are approx. and will vary by manufacturer

Yea John that would work, I need to see what the look like! I like the way Piers's truck looks with the tall tire but not to wide(no mud slingers here) I looked up Bridgestone 265's verses 245's and they are 1. 3 inches taller and . 7 inches wider so that sounds about right.

Technically speaking,

The tallest tire you can mount on a 6. 5" wide rim without voiding the tire warranty is the 235/85R16. I know of no tire manufacturer that produces any of the other sizes with the ability to go on a 6. 5" rim. Granted you can squeeze almost any 16 inch tire on but they won't wear very well and the tire manufacturer will not stand behind them with that application. Go to any manufacturers website and view their spec sheets. Be aware that many tire places will mount the tires with no questions asked. When a tire fails, however, most manufacturers demand the wheel specs and if they are not within the working specs of the tire they deny all coverage. Currently I have 8" wide wheels so I'm forced to run 265/75R16's but I would prefer to run 235/85R16's but they only fit up to a 7" wide wheel.

The 265/75R16 requires at least a 7" wheel

The 285/75R16 requires at least a 7. 5" wheel

The 255/85R16 requires at least a 7" wheel

285's........

just put 285-75-16 on stock 6. 5" rims.

bfg's at ko's. only thing i see is the

air pressure has to be on the lower side to

get good tread contact. right now i'm

at 47#'s front and 35#'s rear.

time will tell. hope to get new rims

some time down the road. but i want

to upgrade the engine first.

good luck!

I just did the same thing. Installed 285/75/16 on stock rims with lower pressure to get even tread contact. I bought the Yokahama Geolander's, and so far they are great. Quiet, smooth and good traction. Someday want to buy bigger rims also.

Actually, you can mount the Dunlop radial rover A/T's in the 255/85/16 size on the original 6. 5" rims. This is an approved rim size per Dunlop. They also come with a 60,000 mile warranty. I have them and they handle very well but are wearing faster than they should. I have 30K miles on mine and they have maybe 10K left. I have kept them inflated to 60 psi in front and 45 psi in the rear. I think that should be adjusted down by at least 5 psi. Mine have worn a little more in the center than the edges. Otherwise, they look really good and like I said, handle rain, snow and mud very well. Here's some info:

These might be a bit bigger than you wanted to go but I had Wild Country TXR's 315/75/16 installed on my truck day before yesterday. With no spacer installed in the front they do rub a bit at full lock especially when backing up. I was suprised to find that these tires, although only load range D's, carried almost a 3400 lb. load rating. I've had these same tires and both of my previous two trucks and haven't a complaint. Be careful in going to big a tire though. A friend of mine with an 01 put these same size tires on and his cruise control stopped working for him. He took it to the dealer and they told him cruise won't work with those larger tires. How big can you go? Now I have to get the bombs going to get my truck back up to speed.

Put 315/75R16 MT/Rs on mine Friday. I love them. Better ride and MUCH less rubber left in the driveway than the POS Michelins. Hardly notice the difference in performance over the 265s. The cruise control works fine. Of course, the 6. 5 inch rims won't handle this size.

I agree with athompson as to the ride being much better. Turning those big tires though made a noticable difference in get up and go at speeds from 70mph on. Basically once the truck hits OD the go is over and the cruising begins. I know there are things that will remedy this and believe me I have to get the truck back to where it was if not better. When my buddy put the 315's on his truck the cruise worked for about a month then went out. The dealer told him it was because of the larger tires and even put stock tires back on and let him take it for a drive. Worked fine with stock tires and then lasted about a week before it went out again. Anyone else heard of this with larger tires added?

Thanks guys, I found a 255/85/16 that is built locally (Dayton) and comes with a 45K free replacement warranty for 470. 00 for all 4, The Dunlop's were $700. 00 for 4. Same treadware temp and traction rating as the Dunlop's, tried to get Yokohama's but there not avalible in the states I guess, got to make one more phone call on that one.

Thanks again, Jim

Tried one 255/85/16 on the front and it rubbed bad, could have been the model being a little taller but it was rubbing half way through the turn radius, I opted for 265/75/16 Bridestone Dualers in a 10 Ply vise a 6Ply(no 6 ply is going to be on my truck) got one heck of a deal from none other than my Sunday School teacher who is making nothing on them but mounting cost, thanks again for all of your help.
