I don't know why I keep getting cursed with these wretched things but the truck I just bought the heat doesn't work in it either what should I check to try and get it working ? Engine comes up to operating temperature but still no heat from the vents

You bought this used ? If the previous owner didnt change his coolant the heater core could certainly clog. Not sure how to test for that though. BTW, the heater in my 2002 ram that I bought brand new works great. So I dont think its dodge.

It's not dodge I've had good ones but these last two never have had a hearter that worked . Anybody know how to back flush the heater core

Saw this on the internet.
Best Answer: First, make sure your cooling system is full, then verify the engine is reaching operating temperature and the thermostat is properly regulating the engine temperature. With the cooling system full and the temperature gauge is in the normal range, feel the heater hoses. One side should be very warm and the other side a little less warm, when the fan is on high. You could have a blend door problem that does not allow enough air to pass over the heater core, or possibly a heater control valve not operating properly (if equipped). If your core is clogged, cooling system neglect is the normal cause. Sometimes, you can reverse flush the heater core by removing the hoses and connecting a garden hose to the outlet of the core. Failing this, you will need to replace the clogged core and be prepared to have additional service needed to combat the neglected cooling system.

Saw this one too, a little more detailed.

Open the hood and carefully locate and touch the upper radiator hose to see if it feels warm. Follow the hose to the engine block and carefully touch it down in that area near the thermostat.

Locate the two smaller hoses that go into the firewall on the right side (passenger side) of the vehicle. In some vehicles, this may not be all that easy and you may have to raise it and crawl underneath to locate and touch-test them. One of these hoses is an inlet to the heater core coming from the radiator; the other is an outlet coming from the heater core. If the inlet hose is hot/warm and the outlet hose is cold, you can pretty much determine your heater core is clogged.

Determine what you want to do. If the heater core hoses are not easily accessible and you have no desire to attempt unclogging the heater core yourself, at least you've isolated the problem and can describe the procedure you performed to a qualified technician. Then he can unclog the heater core for you. If the heater core hoses aren't that difficult to access, you can try to flush out the heater core with a garden hose. Shut off the vehicle and allow it ample time to cool down.

Place a drain bucket under the vehicle beneath the hose connections and remove the two hose clamps with a screwdriver or a pair of channel locks (depending in the type of clamps). Note which hose is which for reinstallation, and allow the heater core and hoses to drain thoroughly.

Take a garden hose and insert it into the inlet tube. Be careful how much water pressure you turn on in the hose. Depending on your water pressure, some hoses can run up to 100 lbs. per square inch of water pressure--which can easily burst a heater core seam. Add a little more pressure until it blows the gunk out of the heater core. This is messy, so don't be wearing your Sunday best.

Replace the hoses to the heater core and tighten the clamps. Add antifreeze to the radiator and start the vehicle again with the radiator cap off in case the system needs to burp. Check underneath for clamp leaks and add antifreeze as necessary until the thermostat gauge in the vehicle gets up to operating temperature. You should feel plenty of heat coming from the heat registers now.

Pull bothheater hoses off and with a garden hose(not too much pressure)try to flow water through the heater core first in one direction than the other. If it has good flow test the controls

does the fan work? is it moving air? if the core checks out then you have a blend door issue. or are the Second Gen's vacuum controlled? i think the hard line that is close to the fuel filter is known to break, might start there.

Not sure if the same controls as my 01 had but the blend door on it crapped out. Heater treated fixed it. If it is that simple fix fairly cheap too

Like BarryG posted most likely the blend door coupler is bad
Check both heater hose for temp after its up to operating temp if both hoses are hot/warm that tells you it has circulation through the heater core...next step is to pull blend door motor to be sure its operating then look at the plastic coupler you'll see its cracked its a 35.00 fix for 95-02 dodges [emoji43]

The 94 has the blend door motor then?

Cable operated by turning the knob from cold to hot. Connects underneath dash on the top section of the big black heater/ac assembly, & it attaches behind the left side of the glove box - invisible to you until you lean your dash forward. If your temperature cable is busted, you can set it manually.

If I pull the dash cover off and the heat switch off can i get to the cable to pull it to manually adjust the heat

To remove the dash top you would have to tilt the whole dash assy to the rear. Tilting it back is all you have to do. The FSM has instructions.

The cable attaches where the red circle is. You can push on the white pivot to either fully open or fully close -- cold or hot - no inbetween! -- the blender.
