I cannot see a cable or lever anywhere

To remove the dash top you would have to tilt the whole dash assy to the rear. Tilting it back is all you have to do. The FSM has instructions.

The cable must hook up behind the knob somewhere doesn't it ?

Take a look at the picture tomblue01 provided. Those tubes go to the heater core. For the umpteenth time, to see the cable connection you have to tilt the dash to the rear.

So the cable doesn't attach to anything but the lever at the heater core ? what moves it then

The temp control knob.

That's what I'm wondering if I can just pull the knob assembly out and possibly pull the cable ? If the cable is bad where can I get One? I finally took time and took temp readings on the heater core hoses truck 140 degrees on both hoses which was a little less than engine temp
