You do what has to be done. This year I have Christmas off. But I will be working New Years. I think I will be working the next 2 Xmas. We have changed our work schedule so its not to bad now.

Is this an always occurance or is it temporary? Your extra commitment may have future bennifits, I recently spent 1. 5 yrs in a temp construction job as an inspector for a huge company project and I think I will get that promotion this year, My extra duty was noticed and I believe I will be rewarded with that extra pay for the rest of my career. An extra 6 grand a year for 20 more years is $120k!!! Think about the whole picture and this may be the best thing that ever happened to you however if you know for a fact that you are simply filling a void and no future money is in it than you should tell your boss that God only gave you so much time and the company is depriving you of alot of personel time that cannot be replaced or compensated for. Never Never forget about your family time, money is NOT a priority over family.

Be safe & drive carefully. IMO a person's effectiveness drops off considerably after ~10 hours - anything more and any critical thinking skills go out the window. I was running a test R&D project when I worked in aerospace and my lab test time was always at the whim of the lab manager & his requirement to get production testing completed so I ended up with techs that were on OT and it showed on several occassions. Had to rerun tests because of stupid mistakes that would not have been made by coherent techs.
